The 1988/89 FA Cup was the 108th edition of the competition. The defending champions were Wimbledon FC , who defeated Liverpool 1-0 last year . The final contested the teams of Liverpool FC and Everton FC . Everton last won the FA Cup in 1984 with a 2-0 win against Watford FC . Liverpool last won the coveted trophy in 1986 in the final against Everton.

The final took place on May 20, 1989 at Wembley Stadium in front of 82,800 spectators and was a remake of the final game from 1986. Three years ago, the team of Liverpool FC had goals from Ian Rush (2) and Craig Johnston , on a goal by Gary Lineker , prevailed 3-1.

Liverpool FC took the lead in the 4th minute with a goal from Irish international John Aldridge and kept this score until shortly before the end of regular time. It was only in the 89th minute that Stuart McCall managed to equalize for Everton. In the ensuing overtime, Ian Rush gave Liverpool FC the lead in the 95th minute, before McCall equalized again in the 102nd minute with his second goal. Welsh Ian Rush's second goal in the 104th minute sealed Liverpool's fourth triumph in the traditional competition.

Hillsborough disaster

The competition this season was overshadowed by the tragic events during the semi-final match on April 15, 1989 between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest at Sheffielder Hillsborough Stadium . The game was abandoned after six minutes as a mass panic broke out in the Liverpool block, which ultimately led to 96 deaths and 766 injuries. It was only after spectators panicked over the fences of the block that the game was stopped by the referee in the 6th minute.

mode

All teams in the first and second English leagues only enter the competition from the third round. This is followed by an elimination game per round. If this game ends in a draw after regular playing time, a replay takes place in which home rights are exchanged. If there is another tie, another game is required.

The team from Watford FC was therefore z. B. forced in the 3rd round to play four games against Newcastle United before the entry into the 4th round was reached.

The two semi-finals will take place on neutral ground, the game between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest was played at Hillsborough Stadium and Old Trafford and the game between Everton FC and Norwich City at Villa Park .
