Course of the game
The starting point was as clear as the result was ultimately. Motor Zwickau traveled to Brandenburg with the best line-up with the later top division shooter, Rentzsch, while the Rostockers lacked two important defenders, Hergesell and Sackritz, and two regular strikers, Barthels and Wolfgang Wruck. In his distress, Rostock's coach glasses had called the 38-year-old Kurt Zapf, who had long since retired, in defense.
Zwickau started furiously and had clear chances to score in the first five minutes. While the Saxons played in the modern 4-2-4 system, Hansa Rostock came along in the traditional 3-2-5, played hesitantly and motionless. If you came dangerously in front of the Zwickauer Tor anyway, the chances were not exploited. Although Rostock was able to create a certain balance after the first urge phase of the motor eleven, the Zwickau opening goal in the 23rd minute was well deserved. Irmscher shot a powerful free kick through the Rostock defensive wall, so that goalkeeper Heinsch could only bounce off. Defender Beier pushed forward with lightning speed and completed with a header. Rostock's equalization efforts then got stuck in the secure opposing defense, Drew's great chance missed from a few meters in front of the goal was symptomatic of the weak shot of the Ostseestädter. Shortly before the break, Zwickau's striker Rentzsch made the preliminary decision. Again with a header on the cross of his left winger Hoffmann, he scored the 2-0. His strike partner Henschel did the rest three minutes after the restart. After a solo run on the right side, he finally outplayed Oldie Zapf and deliberately pushed the ball into the Rostock goal with his left foot. After that the racy game flattened out, Rostock resigned and Zwickau managed its reassuring lead. The best players in the game were understandably on the side of Zwickau, no Rostock could get past goalkeeper Croy, director Irmscher directed his team's game with ease. From the Rostock torso only Seehaus and Madeja stood out with good approaches.
Comment by the GDR national coach Soos: “A well-deserved victory for the Zwickauers, who played fresher and faster and always had their opponents under control. The Rostock, on the other hand, suffered from their known storm weaknesses and their poor penetration. " (German Sportecho May 2nd, 1967)
