This led to criticism from the teams and fans. Announcements during the game were also not possible.

Course of the game:
Ecuador came under particular pressure in the Maracana Stadium, because to make it safely to the round of 16 would have needed a victory against France. After seven minutes, the game should have turned in favor of the South Americans, but referee Doué obviously did not recognize the blow by Mamadou Sakho in the face of Oswaldo Minda as violent - a wrong decision not to give a red card. After that, the game was a good one anyway. Antoine Griezmann shot past (11th), Moussa Sissoko checked Dominguez (15th), Dominguez sailed past a cross just like Benzema (27th) and Montero blocked a Benzema acute angle shot (28th). Ecuador became dangerous for the first time after 33 minutes when Arroyo shot goalkeeper Lloris in the arms. Pogba's header five minutes later Dominguez parried great, on the other hand Lloris defused a header from Enner Valencia. After the break, France improved significantly, but also Ecuador's goalkeeper. Dominguez steered a shot from Griezmann to the post (47.). Ecuador captain Antonio Valencia weakened his team even further, seeing the red card in the 50th minute for a brutal foul on Lucas Digne. Matuidi only hit Dominguez's arms (62nd), Arroyo deflected Benzema's long-range shot for a corner (65th), Sissoko chased the ball over the crossbar (69th), Pogba missed with his head (73rd) and Benzema tested the sovereign Dominguez . In between, Noboa, who wore a head bandage after a duel in the first half, had a single chance for Ecuador before 79 minutes when Ibarra was denied by Lloris. Three minutes later, Arroyo could only shoot the ball past. Ecuador tried hard, but only France came to a conclusion: Benzema (84th), Remy (87th) and Giroud (90th + 2) tested Dominguez and Pogba shot past (89th). Ecuador stormed to the end (shots from Caicedo and Ayovi were blocked), but in the end both teams went goalless. With that, Ecuador was eliminated as third party.
