Football World Cup 2014 / Qualification (CONCACAF)

The continental association CONCACAF

The associations of the North and Central American and Caribbean Football Confederation ( CONCACAF ) have three permanent places for the 2014 World Cup , which the United States , Costa Rica and Honduras were able to secure. Another World Cup participant was determined in an intercontinental decision-making meeting against the Oceanic Representative New Zealand ( OFC ). Mexico won this comparison and qualified for the World Cup finals.

All 35 CONCACAF associations, which are also members of the world association FIFA , registered for the qualification . The Bahamas withdrew from the competition after the first round.

FIFA regulations

According to FIFA regulations, the preliminary round matches in the form of group and cup matches could be played in home and return matches or, in exceptional cases, in tournament form in one of the participating countries. In the group matches, three points were awarded for a win and one for a draw. The following criteria were decisive:

1. higher number of points
2. better goal difference
3. higher number of goals scored
4. higher number of points from the direct encounters between teams with the same points and goals
5. better goal difference from the direct encounters between the teams with the same points and goals
6. higher number of goals from direct encounters between teams with equal points and goals
7. higher number of away goals from direct encounters between teams with the same points and goals if only two teams are affected.

If two teams had done the same according to these criteria, a playoff could have been scheduled. This case did not occur.

In the cup games, the higher number of away goals scored after the two games were tied. If the number of away goals was the same, extra time was played. If no goal was scored in extra time, the match was decided on penalties. With the same number of goals in extra time, the away team qualified because more away goals were scored.

mode

The qualification in the CONCACAF zone was played in four rounds. First, the teams placed 26th to 35th competed against each other in a knockout round in order to reduce the number of teams to 30. In the second round, the associations placed 7th to 25th and the five qualifiers from the 1st round formed six groups of four, from which the first group qualified for the 3rd round. In the third round, the six top-seeded teams also entered the qualification. The twelve teams were divided into three groups of four, from which the two group best qualified for the fourth round. In the 4th round, the six remaining national teams played in the league system for the three direct World Cup places and the play-off place.

First round

In the first round, the ten worst -ranked teams in the FIFA world rankings competed against each other in a knockout system with a return leg. The five winners of the first round advanced to the second round.

¹ As there is no suitable venue in Montserrat, the home game of Montserrat was played at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
² Due to government interference, the Association of Belize has been temporarily suspended by FIFA. The second leg, scheduled for June 19, 2011, was canceled and postponed to a later date before July 10, 2011, which was initially not determined. On July 7th, FIFA temporarily lifted the suspension; the second leg was played on July 17 at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in Honduras. If the situation had not normalized, Belize would have been excluded from the qualifying competition.
^{3 In the} absence of a suitable venue in Anguilla, Anguilla's home game was played at the Estadio de Fútbol Panamericano de San Cristóbal in the Dominican Republic.

Second round

The draw for the qualifying groups took place on July 30, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro .

Fourth round

The three group winners and runners-up in the third round formed a group of six. The game was played from February 2013 in the championship system with home and return matches. The first three teams were able to qualify directly for the 2014 World Cup. The fourth placed team qualified for the intercontinental playoffs against the OFC qualifier winners , New Zealand .
