Eugenie "Genie" Bouchard (born February 25, 1994 in Montreal ) is a Canadian tennis player .

Career

Bouchard started playing tennis at the age of five. She is a member of Canada's National Training Center in Montreal. Since 2011 she has also been playing for the Canadian Fed Cup team , for which she has contributed eleven wins out of four defeats.

2008-2010

In 2008 she won both singles and doubles at an ITF tournament in Costa Rica among the juniors , as well as the singles title at the ITF All Canadian tournament in Burlington .

At the age of 15 years and one month, she won the Canadian indoor championships for under 18-year-olds in Toronto in 2009 with a final victory over Marianne Jodoin (6: 4, 7: 5); thus she was one of the youngest winners since the tournament was founded. She won her first professional match at a Challenger tournament in Caserta , Italy , where she defeated Federica Grazioso 6: 4 and 7: 6. That same year she also won the ITF Pan-American Championship, one of her greatest successes as a junior.

2011-2013

At the Australian Open , Bouchard lost the semi-finals of the junior women against number 5 seed Mónica Puig 4: 6, 4: 6. A week later she won her first ITF tournament; in the Burnie final she defeated 16-year-old Zheng Saisai in straight sets . She won her second ITF title in Croatia in April with a final victory over Jessica Ginier. Because of her good performance, she was appointed to the Canadian Fed Cup team ; against Slovenia she lost her first game with 0: 6, 4: 6 against Polona Hercog , against Maša Zec Peškirič she won 6: 4, 6: 1. At the Wimbledon Junior Championships in 2011 she made it to the quarter-finals, in which she had to admit defeat to number 3 Irina Khrmacheva with 2: 6, 2: 6. In doubles, she won the competition at the side of Grace Min. A week later she was in the final at the ITF tournament in Waterloo, Canada with her US partner Megan Moulton-Levy, in which she won the US-Americans Alexandra Mueller and Asia Muhammed lost in the match tie-break . At the end of July Bouchard defeated number 114 in the world rankings, Alison Riske , in the first round of the WTA tournament in San Diego - it was her first win on the WTA Tour ; in round two she lost 2: 6, 2: 6 to number 2 seeded Nadja Petrowa .

In 2012 she won both finals in the junior women’s Wimbledon ; in singles she defeated Elina Switolina 6: 2, 6: 2 and in doubles she prevailed on the side of Taylor Townsend with 6: 4 and 6: 3 against the pairing Belinda Bencic / Ana Konjuh .

In October 2013 she reached her first WTA final in Osaka , which she lost 6: 3, 5: 7 and 2: 6 to Samantha Stosur . In November she was named Newcomer of the Year by the WTA for her rapid rise into the top 50. She finished the season in 32nd place in the world, making her the top-ranked teenager and top-ranked Canadian at the time.

Promotion to the top ten

In 2014 she was in the main field of the Australian Open for the first time and reached her first semi-final in a Grand Slam tournament there . She was the first Canadian in 22 years in the semi-finals of a major tournament. In the quarter-finals, she defeated the former world number one Ana Ivanović , who had previously eliminated the current number one, Serena Williams . In the semifinals, Bouchard lost 2: 6 and 4: 6 to the eventual tournament winner Li Na . After the tournament she was among the top 20 players in the world rankings for the first time (19th place). A group of Australian fans, the Genie Army , which Bouchard cheered loudly during the games , caused a sensation . In her home country, after her successful performance in Melbourne, there was a real hype about her person. At the French Open she also reached the semi-finals after victories over Shahar Peer , Julia Görges , Johanna Larsson , Angelique Kerber and Carla Suárez Navarro , which she lost to Marija Sharapova 6: 4, 5: 7, 2: 6.

At Wimbledon , Bouchard reached her third Grand Slam semifinals in a row. With the subsequent victory over Simona Halep (7: 6, 6: 2), she was the first Canadian of the Open Era to enter the final of a Grand Slam tournament, in which she lost to Petra Kvitová 3: 6 and 0: 6. Nevertheless, she improved to 7th place in the world rankings - the best placement that a Canadian tennis player has ever achieved. In October it was even number 5.

At the end of November 2014, it was announced that Bouchard and her longtime coach Nick Saviano would go their separate ways from 2015. The American, who only became her head coach in October 2013, had looked after the Canadian since she was 12 years old. In August 2015, Bouchard parted ways with her next coach, Sam Sumyk, after just six months.
