The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to job losses as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .

economy

For centuries, the residents of the village lived on the yields of their fields and gardens as self-sufficiency . Viticulture and livestock farming were also practiced to a small extent. Agriculture continues to play a leading role in the municipality's economic life.

history

According to the knowledge of the amateur archaeologist Michel Charron, the history of the place can be traced back to Roman or Gallo-Roman times. In ancient times, a Roman road ran from Nantes ( Portus Namnetum ) to Poitiers ( Pictavium ) through what is now the municipality. At the end of the 9th century (889) the place name Curgiacum is mentioned for the first time; the apse of the church also points to this time.

  • The predecessor of today's parish church of Saint-Hilaire was built around the year 900. In the 12th century the building was given a new three-aisled nave with four-part bundle pillars in the Poitevin style; the squat looking crossing tower also dates from this time. The age and function (s) of the south porch ( portique ) is not clear. The transept-like chapel extensions, however, are an ingredient of the 19th century. The bundle pillars of the nave are adorned with numerous painted coats of arms. The church building was placed under protection as a Monument historique in 1909 .
  • An altar-like base with a bundled column shaft and a cross at the top rests on a stepped pedestal in the cemetery. This Hosanna cross probably dates from the time the church was built and was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1890 .
  • Another stone cross from the 16th or 17th century is only about 100 m away.
  • The Logis de la Genussée is a representative manor in the center of the village.
outside
  • About 500 m east of the village, a multi-arched medieval stone bridge crosses the Thouet river; it was declared a monument historique in 1926 .
  • Not far from there is an old water mill that was in operation until 1966.
  • Another old stone bridge ( Pont de l'Archère ) crosses the Bédou brook approx . 1.5 km south of the village.
  • About a kilometer east of the village is the 15th century fortified Logis de la Chaussée estate , which was classified as a monument historique in 1992 .
  • A pigeon house ( pigeonnier ) assigned to the 16th century forms one of the corner towers of a fortified estate in the hamlet of Le Fresne ; it was listed as a historical monument in 1989.
  • The Château d'Orfeuille , about four kilometers north-west of the village, is another fortified manor from the late Middle Ages; however, it has been repeatedly ravaged and set on fire. Most of the current buildings date from the 17th century, but were thoroughly restored between 1893 and 1899 and have been recognized as Monuments historiques since 1996 .
