The place name Amallo is mentioned for the first time in 1095 . In the late Middle Ages, the place and church were closely connected to the Abbeys of Airvault and Parthenay. Amailloux was the first place that was plundered and set on fire by General Westermann's revolutionary troops during the Vendée uprising (1793–1796) .
Attractions
- The nave and facade of the 13th century parish church of Saint-Étienne are secured by many buttresses . The flat-closing apse with its late Gothic window seems to have been added later. The interior of the church, accessible via a west and a south portal with multi-step staircases, has three aisles with equally high vaults ( hall church ), with the vault ribs appearing to grow out of the round pillars .
- outside
- The Château de Tennessus is located about 4 km southeast of the village ( 46 ° 42 ′ 50 ″ N , 0 ° 16 ′ 42 ″ W ) and was built in the 14th and 15th centuries - moats ( douves ) and parts of the one mighty keep ( donjon ) tapering drawbridge are still preserved; in the 18th century the living quarters ( corps de logis ) were modernized. The building is privately owned and was classified as a Monument historique in 1943 .
- The one and a half kilometers west located in the hamlet about FOUGERIT standing Château de FOUGERIT dates from the 14th century; here, too, the moat and drawbridge have been preserved. The building is also privately owned.
- Two other castles ( Château de Villebouin and Château de Villegué ) are only preserved as ruins.
