The HP Japan Women's Open Tennis 2012 was a hard court tennis tournament for women in Osaka . It was part of the WTA Tour 2012 as a tournament in the International category . It took place at the same time as the Generali Ladies Linz 2012 from October 8th to 14th, 2012.

Defending champion in the singles was Marion Bartoli , who did not appear to defend the title. In doubles, the pairing Kimiko Date Krumm and Zhang Shuai was the defending champion. Date Krumm and her partner Heather Watson made it into the double-finals again this year. There they lost against the top seeded pairing Raquel Kops-Jones / Abigail Spears in two sets with 6: 1, 6: 4. In the individual final, the two unseeded players Heather Watson (ATP No. 71) and Kai-chen Chang (ATP No. 134) faced each other. For both of them it would have been the first individual title at a tournament on the WTA Tour. The individual winner was Watson, who defeated her opponent Chang 7: 5, 5: 7, 7: 6 4 after defending five match points in an exciting match of three that lasted over three hours .

Qualification for the HP Japan Women's Open Tennis 2012 took place from October 6th to 8th, 2012. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
