Schenna Castle
The Schenna Castle in Schenna near Merano is one of the most important castles in South Tyrol. Today you can visit the castle and the state rooms formerly inhabited by the count's family in personal tours of the Count von Spiegelfeld, brother-in-law of the owner.
history
The Lords of Schenna appear as Ministerials of the Counts of Tyrol in the course of the 12th century. The castle was, around the year 1350 instead of the old castle Scena, which was mentioned in a document still in 1346 by Petermann of Schenna , 1352-1369 Governor of Tyrol and Burggraf to Tyrol , built. At this time Margarete was the last Gorizia Countess of Tyrol. A number of well-known Tyrolean aristocratic families owned the castle, such as the Lords of Starkenberg , who lost it to Duke Friedrich with an empty pocket in 1423 , or from 1496 to the Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn .
In 1845 Archduke Johann bought the castle, who left it to his descendants, the Counts of Meran , after his death . It is still in their possession today (the owner is Franz Graf von Meran from Schloss Stainz ) and is lived in and managed by members of the family. Today the property includes not only the castle, but also the mausoleum on the church hill of Schenna, where Archduke Johann and his family found their final resting place, as well as the Thurnerhof as a farm and traditional inn.
The collection
Archduke Johann's collections, which are exhibited in many rooms of the palace, include paintings and numerous portraits of his Habsburg ancestors, which show his deep roots in his Austrian homeland. The palace also houses the largest private Andreas Hofer collection, as well as paintings by Johann's chamber painters ( Eduard Gurk and Matthäus Loder ) who created impressive landscape paintings, everyday objects from Johann's private collection, and a collection of various weapons from the 12th to 19th centuries Century.
