India previously played a tour in Sri Lanka , Pakistan the Asia Cup in 1997 . The two teams had already competed in a comparable series in Canada the year before .

In the game there was an incident in which the Pakistani player Inzamam-ul-Haq went into the stands to silence a spectator who had insulted him via megaphone. In addition, the Pakistani substitute brought him a cricket bat from the bank, which Inzamam was only unable to use thanks to the use of security forces. Inzamam-ul-Haq was subsequently suspended for two games.
