John Fisher (born March 13, 1806 in Londonderry , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , †  March 28, 1882 in Batavia , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Fisher attended public schools in his home country and then worked in commerce. Between 1836 and 1856 he led a molten iron in Hamilton ( Canada ). In this city in the Canadian province of Ontario he was in the years 1848 and 1849 a member of the local council and 1850 mayor. From 1856 he lived in Batavia, New York State. From 1866 to 1868 he was state commissioner for the establishment of an institution for the blind in Batavia. He also ran a fire insurance company. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1868 Fisher was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Burt Van Horn on March 4, 1869 . Since he was not confirmed in 1870, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, John Fisher returned to the fire insurance business. He died on March 28, 1882 in Batavia, where he was also buried.
