John Parker Hale (born March 31, 1806 in Rochester , New Hampshire , †  November 19, 1873 in Dover , New Hampshire) was an American lawyer and politician who represented the state of New Hampshire in both chambers of the US Congress .

After graduating, he studied law. From 1832 to 1834 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives . He was then from 1834 to 1841 as successor to Daniel McDurell federal prosecutor for the district of New Hampshire. In 1843 he was elected as a member of the US House of Representatives for the Democrats , of which he was a member until 1845. In 1846 he returned to the New Hampshire House of Representatives and was elected Speaker of the Chamber.

From 1847 to 1853 he was a member of the Senate , initially as an independent Democrat and from 1848 as a member of the Free Soil Party , which had split off from them . In November 1847, the Liberty Party had chosen him as their presidential candidate for the 1848 election . After the union with the Free Soil Party in August 1848 he was ready to step aside and was defeated in a runoff election by Martin Van Buren with 183-244, who was now the joint top candidate. In the Senate he distinguished himself as one of the fiercest opponents of the Mexican-American War . In 1852 he ran for the US presidential election, but only achieved 4.9% of the votes and was not awarded a single elector .

From 1855 to 1865 he was again a member of the Senate, first as a member of the Free Soil Party and after its union with the Republican Party from 1856 as a Republican.

From 1865 to 1870 he was still ambassador to Spain. He then returned to New Hampshire, where he died in 1873.
