About this picture

Karlsbad is a municipality in the southern district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg on the northern edge of the Black Forest. It was created in the course of the community reform on September 1, 1971 from the formerly independent communities Auerbach, Ittersbach, Langensteinbach, Mutschelbach and Spielberg.

geography

location

Karlsbad is located on the Alb-Pfinz plateau . The closest larger cities are Karlsruhe , Ettlingen and Pforzheim .

Community structure

The municipality of Karlsbad consists of the five districts Auerbach , Ittersbach , Langensteinbach , Mutschelbach and Spielberg . The districts are officially named by prefixing the name of the municipality and followed by the name of the respective district, connected by a hyphen. The districts also form residential districts within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code . In all five districts, localities are set up within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code, each with its own local council and mayor as its chairman.

The village of Auerbach belongs to the district of Auerbach. The Ittersbach district includes the village of Ittersbach and the houses Im Erlach, Im Kirchle, Im Layle and Im Stöckmädle. The Langensteinbach village and the Bethanien recreation home belong to the district of Langensteinbach. The Mutschelbach district includes the villages of Mutschelbach, Mitteldorf (also Mittelmutschelbach); Mutschelbach, Oberdorf (also Obermutschelbach); Mutschelbach, Unterdorf (also Untermutschelbach). The Spielberg district includes the village of Spielberg and the Fischweier settlement in the Alb valley with a S-Bahn station and Hotel Fischweier.

The Wolmersbur desert lies in the district of Ittersbach . In the district of Mutschelbach is the village of Vitzenloch, which was only mentioned in 1295 and is possibly identical to Mitteldorf.

The Vitzenloch desert

In 1259 Rudolf von Roßwag sold his two villages Muschelenbach and Vitzenbach to the Herrenalb monastery . The exact location of Vitzenloch is not yet known. It is believed to be near Mutschelbach and Wilferdingen . This is supported by the fact that it is always mentioned together with Mutschelbach, and that a document from 1295 also mentions Rannwalde, which lies between Wilferdingen and Pforzheim . Where the districts Wilferdingen, Königsbach and Singen meet, the field names Im Vittsbruch and Zu Pfitz can be found . Perhaps we have to look for the place in that region; but also on the edge of the Rannwald there are several field names that indicate former settlement, such as the name Weilerle on Rannwaldstraße, the name Heimenäcker am Rannbach.

history

Karlsbad was founded in the course of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg on September 1, 1971 from the formerly independent communities Auerbach, Ittersbach, Langensteinbach, Mutschelbach and Spielberg.

The name refers to a 1719 by Karl III. Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach , the founder of Karlsruhe , built the Fürstenbad in Langensteinbach, not on the famous Bohemian Karlsbad .

Districts

Auerbach

Auerbach was first mentioned in a document in 1278 . It was initially owned by the Lords of Remchingen , later by the Herrenalb Monastery and then fell to the Duke of Württemberg along with other monastery locations . In 1603 the place came into the possession of the margrave Ernst Friedrich von Baden-Durlach through an exchange and from then on belonged to Baden .

Ittersbach

Ittersbach was first mentioned in a document in 1232 under the name Utilspur . This name changed over time to today's place name Ittersbach. Ittersbach belonged to different lordships, including Herrenalb and Frauenalb, and was in Württemberg and Baden until it finally became Baden after the Thirty Years' War and was placed under the Langensteinbach office. The economic situation could be improved considerably through the establishment of industry around 1854. The limestone quarries and brick factories also created new sources of income. After the Second World War, Ittersbach went up economically thanks to modern industry. There is almost no agriculture any more. Until the Baden-Württemberg district reform, Ittersbach was part of the Pforzheim district (today Enzkreis).

The Wolmersbur desert lies in the Ittersbach district , which was lost in the 15th century.

Langensteinbach

The history of Langensteinbach can be traced back to 1197. In the 18th century it was famous as a princely bath. Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden built a bathing building below the Barbara chapel in 1719.

Mutschelbach

The history of Mutschelbach can be traced back to the year 1278. In 1936 the community of Mutschelbach was founded from the three Waldensian villages Ober-, Mittel- and Untermutschelbach.

Spielberg

The oldest written mention of Spielberg comes from the year 1281. After the Reformation, initially in Württemberg , Langensteinbach became part of the margraviate of Baden-Durlach in 1603 .

politics

Municipal council

The parish council usually has 24 honorary members who are elected for five years. The number of members can be increased by compensating seats (total 2019: 29 seats; 2014: 25). In addition, the mayor acts as the municipal council chairman with voting rights.

By choosing the wrong part of town , the districts are guaranteed a fixed number of seats: at least nine from Langensteinbach, at least five from Ittersbach, at least four from Spielberg, and at least three from Auerbach and Mutschelbach.

The 2019 local elections led to the following result (in brackets: difference to 2014):

Municipal Council 2019
Party / list Share of votes Seats
Free voters 33.0% (+0.1) 9 (+1)
Green 23.8% (+6.3) 7 (+3)
CDU 22.7% (−7.8) 7 (−1)
SPD 17.6% (−1.5) 5 (± 0)
FDP / Liberal List 2.9% (+2.9) 1 (+1)
Turnout: 65.2% (+10.6)

mayor

In May 2015, Jens Timm was elected to succeed Rudi Knodel in the second ballot. He was first elected mayor in 1999.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In blue at the front up to the middle of the shield on the right edge of the shield, three silver (white) stakes bent backwards and ending at one point on the left edge of the shield, a bowl in confused colors in the middle of the shield."

Meaning of the coat of arms : The municipal coat of arms shows a drinking bowl in the middle, which is supposed to remind of the former Fürstenbad in Langensteinbach. The piles running downwards symbolize the five districts.

Culture and sights

Buildings

  • The former town hall of the Spielberg district is well worth seeing.
  • In addition, the classicist Ludwig Church in Langensteinbach, built 1826-28 based on a design by Friedrich Weinbrenner . Since Weinbrenner died in 1826, the execution was left to his talented student August Schwarz . The church tower emerges powerfully from the front of the nave. The language of detail also supports the monumental expression (e.g. the insubordinate pillars on the ground floor of the tower facade).
  • Furthermore, in the forest of Langensteinbach, there is the St. Barbara ruin , which used to be a well-known place of pilgrimage and served as an escape church.
  • Not far from the St. Barbara ruins are the remains of a tower castle , the castle Langensteinbach also called Roman Tower.
