Bremen artist dispute
- January: Because Gustav Pauli , scientific director of Der Kunstverein in Bremen , bought the painting Poppy Field from Vincent van Gogh for the Kunsthalle Bremen , a “warning” appears in the Bremer Nachrichten . That is the impetus for the Bremen artist dispute .
- April 17 : The 80-page brochure A Protest German Artists by Carl Vinnen and others appears in the Bremen artists' dispute . In June an answer will appear under the title In the Battle for Art. The answer to the “protest of German artists” .

- May 11 : In Duisburg the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Theater Duisburg by architect Martin Dulfer . The foundation stone for the neoclassical building will be laid on June 27th .
- The Curiohaus in Hamburg is completed, built according to a design by the architect Johann Emil Schaudt for the Society of Friends of the Patriotic Schooling System and named after the founder of this society, Johann Carl Daniel Curio .

- July 12 : The Fritz Reuter monument in Stavenhagen by sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider is unveiled.

- Lovis Corinth paints the portrait of Carl Hagenbeck with the walrus Pallas in oil on canvas . A few months later, in December, he suffered a stroke.
- November / December: After a stay in Paris, Umberto Boccioni paints the picture La strada entra nella casa and initially titled it simply balcony .
- Franz Marc paints the watercolor horses in landscape . It is probably a study for the work The Big Blue Horses, written in the same year .
- Egon Schiele paints the expressionist painting Dead City III in oil on wood .

- Raymond Duchamp-Villon , Albert Gleizes , František Kupka , Fernand Léger , Jean Metzinger , Francis Picabia and Jacques Villon found the Puteaux Group . This spring has a much-discussed exhibition in the Salon des Indépendants . They are attributed to the style of cubism .
- March 25th : The Emperor Franz Joseph's Jubilee Artists' House opens in Brno with an exhibition by the Association of German-Moravian Visual Artists .
- May to June: The Sonderbund Westdeutscher Kunstfreunde und Künstler (Sonderbund Westdeutscher Kunstfreunde und Künstler) is holding its third exhibition in the Städtische Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, subtitled Rhenish and French Art . 147 exhibits are shown, including 101 French works.
- June 21 to July 11 : The German gallery owner Paul Cassirer is exhibiting works by Oskar Kokoschka for the first time in the Café Park Schönbrunn in Karlsbad . There are around 30 paintings and eight illustrations for his poem The White Animal Slayer . The collector Karl Ernst Osthaus brings the exhibition to his private Folkwang Museum in Hagen and acquires a portrait with the title A Precious Woman .
New artists' association Munich / Der Blaue Reiter
- December 2nd : After a dispute provoked by him, Wassily Kandinsky leaves the Neue Künstlervereinigung München and founds the artists' association Der Blaue Reiter with Franz Marc .
- December 18 : After the break up of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München , both its last exhibition and the first of the Blauer Reiters editorial team opened on the same day , where Franz Marc, among others , showed his paintings Blue Horse , Horses in Landscape and The Yellow Cow .

- January 13 : An unemployed that have become Navy Koch stands in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum on Rembrandt's painting The Night Watch with a knife.
- August 21 : The portrait of the Mona Lisa is stolen from the Louvre by the 31-year-old Italian painter Vincenzo Peruggia . During the investigation, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire and the painter Pablo Picasso came under suspicion.
