- April 14 : The administration building for workers' affairs , built according to plans by Hans Grässel in the neo-baroque style with elements from the conservative wing of reform architecture in the Isarvorstadt in Munich , is completed after around two years of construction.
Painting and sculpture
- April 13 The bronze Heinrich von Mattoni statue created by Edmund von Hellmer is unveiled in Kyselka .
- June: The first issue of Blast , the English Vortizists' magazine, appears. The editor is Wyndham Lewis , who also writes many articles himself. Important authors are Ezra Pound , Rebecca West and Ford Madox Ford . The booklet appears in large folio format . The numerous illustrations are by Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska , among others .
Museums and exhibitions
- March: In Japan there is an exhibition of the Sōsaku-hanga , a form of woodcut , which - with reference to Herwarth Walden - is based on the magazine Der Sturm .
- May 15 : The Cologne Werkbund exhibition , the first exhibition of the German Werkbund founded by artists, architects and industrialists , is opened by Henry van de Velde . Among others, artists such as Walter Gropius , Peter Behrens , Hermann Muthesius , Bruno Taut , Bruno Paul , Theodor Fischer and Ludwig Paffendorf are exhibiting a total of 50 exemplary buildings, which are intended to give the general public an insight into contemporary modern design. One of the goals of the Werkbund members is not only to design “buildings and consumer goods” of quality, but also the associated reform of working and living conditions, preferably of workers. Because of the outbreak of the World War, the exhibition initiated by Konrad Adenauer , which was originally supposed to last until the end of October, will be closed early on August 8th .
- May to October: The International Exhibition for Book Trade and Graphics (Bugra) takes place in Leipzig . The exhibition is organized by the German Book Trade Association . The initiator of the exhibition is Max Seliger , director of the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the institution he heads. Ludwig Volkmann , the chairman of the book trade association, is elected president of the exhibition .
- The free secession splits after the implied resolution of the New Secession , led by Max Liebermann of the Berlin Secession from. The group of around 50 artists has its first exhibition in the same year.
- The Baltimore Museum of Art is founded.
- The Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao is founded.
Others
- March 10 : The suffragette Mary Richardson assassinated the painting Venus in front of the mirror by Diego Velázquez, exhibited in London's National Gallery . The work of art can be restored.
- April: Paul Klee sets off with Louis Moilliet and August Macke on a three-week trip to Tunis , which takes them from Bern via Lyon and Marseille to Tunisia. They visit Saint-Germain (later Ezzahra ), Sidi Bou Saïd , Carthage , Hammamet , Kairouan , after which they return to Munich via Palermo , Naples, Rome, Milan and Bern. Klee and Macke in particular inspired the journey to numerous works.
- August 22 : In Vienna, the anchor clock designed by Franz Matsch is erected on a bridge connecting two buildings. It counts as an outstanding work of Art Nouveau .
