Events
United States
- April 10 : On the occasion of the opening of the Society of Independent Artists' first exhibition, the first issue of the dada's magazine The Blind Man appears in New York with contributions by the British writer Mina Loy . The magazine is published by Marcel Duchamp , Henri-Pierre Roché and Beatrice Wood . Due to a lost bet, the magazine will be discontinued after the second issue.
- April: The ready-made fountain by Marcel Duchamp , one with “R. Mutt "signed commercial urinal from a plumbing shop , is rejected by the board of the Society of Independent Artists . The non-exhibition leads to a controversy about the concept of art . The work, of which only one photo still exists, is one of the key works of modern art today .
France / Spain
- January: The magazine of Dadaism and incipient surrealism, published by the French artist Francis Picabia , named 391, appears for the first time in Barcelona.
- April: The Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani meets the art student Jeanne Hébuterne in Paris and ends her relationship with the poet and art critic Beatrice Hastings because of her .
- December 3 : The first solo exhibition with works by Amedeo Modigliani opens with a vernissage in Berthe Weill's gallery in Paris . At the request of the police, the exhibition had to end a little later because the pictures, including the oil paintings Nu couché ( reclining nude ) and reclining female nude on a white pillow , commissioned by Leopold Zborowski , are too revealing.
German Empire
- Because of the war, the Great Berlin Art Exhibition is relocated from Berlin to the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf . Artists from the Berlin Secession and artists from the Free Secession are also included .
Netherlands
The Dutch artist group De Stijl is founded. It is committed to a geometric-abstract, "ascetic" form of representation in art and architecture and a purism limited to functionality , which, similar to the German Bauhaus , to which there is a close relationship in terms of ideas and art history, principles for an aesthetic that can be applied to all areas of design sets up. Founding members are the painter and art theorist Theo van Doesburg , the painters Piet Mondrian and Georges Vantongerloo , the architects Robert van't Hoff , JJP Oud and Jan Wils , the painters Vilmos Huszár and Bart van der Leck , and the poet Antony Kok . Your ideas are influenced by Cubism and Wassily Kandinsky's art-theoretical publications . The concern of the group is to completely turn away from the representation principles of traditional art and to work out a new, completely abstract design language based on the variation of a few elementary principles of visual design (horizontal / vertical, large / small, light / dark and the primary colors). That means the reduction of colors to the three primary colors red, yellow and blue as well as the non-colors black, gray and white. De Stijl's concepts are not only effective in the fine arts and architecture, but also in the design of furniture and other everyday objects. The art newspaper De Stijl will appear from July 16 .
