- December 6th : The German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt discovers the 3000 year old bust of Nefertiti , wife of Akhenaten , in Tell El-Amarna .

- January 26th : The Schlosshotel Gotha , built by the architects Hart & Lesser in just ten months, opens.
- The Duisburg Theater, built in neoclassical style based on a design by the architect Martin Dülfer, in downtown Duisburg is completed. The opening ceremony will take place on November 7th .

- January: Marcel Duchamp paints Nu descendant un escalier no. 2 , a key work of classical modernism that he is submitting to the Paris Salon des Indépendants for the exhibition from March 20 to May 16. The artists of the cubist Puteaux group , above all Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger , see Duchamp's work as a mockery of their style and therefore reject the work. On the day the exhibition opens, Duchamp is informed of the decision by his brothers Jacques and Raymond . In the years that followed, Marcel Duchamp kept his distance from the Cubists . Just a month later, he exhibited the nude at a Cubist exhibition in Barcelona, where the picture hardly attracted any attention.
- The term Orphism is coined by the writer Guillaume Apollinaire for the pictures by Robert Delaunay , who in the same year gives an introduction to the Delaunay exhibition in the gallery Der Sturm by Herwarth Walden . He sees this as the overcoming of cubism .
- Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso develop paper collé , an early form of collage .
- Egon Schiele paints the expressionist portrait of Wally in oil on wood , depicting his lover Walburga Neuzil . At the same time, the self-portrait with lantern fruits is created .
- Marianne von Werefkin , member of the expressionist artist group Neue Künstlervereinigung München, paints the socially critical painting Factory City in tempera on cardboard .
- Juan Gris paints a homage to Pablo Picasso .
- After three years, Paul Émile Chabas completes his work Matinée de Septembre , which causes a scandal.
Exhibitions and museums
- February 5th to 24th : The first group exhibition of the Futurists outside of Italy takes place in the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris .
- April 12th : Herwarth Walden organizes the first futurist exhibition in Germany in the gallery of Der Sturm magazine in Berlin.
- May 25th to September 30th : An exhibition of the Sonderbund takes place in Cologne .
- Autumn: The Cubist exhibition group Section d'Or has its first exhibition at the La Boétie gallery in Paris, accompanied by the publication Du Cubisme by Jean Metzinger and Albert Gleizes . Among other things, Marcel Duchamp's painting Nu descendant un escalier no. 2 will be shown there.
- October 5 to December 31 : Despite the failure of the first exhibition in 1910 , Roger Fry organizes a Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition . The secretary of this exhibition is Leonard Woolf . In addition to the French Impressionists, this exhibition also shows contemporary British works by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell , among others .
