The 2015 world champion Sergei Schubenkow was one of the favorites again - at the start under a neutral flag. He was also runner-up in 2013 and European champion in 2014 . Other medal candidates and contenders for victory were the Jamaican Olympic champion of 2016 Omar McLeod, his compatriot Hansle Parchment as vice world champion in 2015 and Olympic third in 2012 , the Spanish Olympic runner-up in 2016 Orlando Ortega and the Hungarian vice European champion in 2016 Balázs Baji. The US Olympic champion of 2012 and world record holder Aries Merrit had also qualified for this final, but no longer had the full potential of his strong years.

Apart from Parchment, the finalists all got off their starting blocks well and were still very close together on the first two hurdles. Then a duel developed between Olympic champion McLeod and defending champion Schubenkow. At the last two hurdles, Omar McLeod finally prevailed and became the new world champion. Sergei Schubenkow came second a tenth of a second behind. The battle for bronze was extremely close until the end. In the end, Balázs Baji won the medal. Two hundredths of a second behind him, Frenchman Garfield Darien finished fifth. Aries Merritt and Shane Brathwaite from Barbados followed only one hundredth of a second back. Orlando Ortega was seventh four hundredths of a second behind, ahead of Hansle Parchment. The seventh and eighth were only four thousandths of a second apart.
