List of active steamers
The list of active steamers contains a selection of currently serviceable steamers . Info texts above the tables provide information about the whereabouts of steamships that have been decommissioned, as well as steamships that have been converted to diesel operation.
Germany
In Germany there are currently (as of spring 2018) twelve active paddle steamers as well as various other screw steamers and steam tugs and ice breakers. Nine historic paddle steamers belong to the Saxon Steamship Company , whose fleet is considered the oldest and largest in the world. The historic port of Berlin and the Westphalian Industrial Museum in Dortmund are still home to several tugboats. In the historic port of Berlin it is the tugboat Andreas and Gesa .
The steamship Kaiser Friedrich has been restored by Märkische Dampfschifffahrt since spring 2017 . The Wehlen Bastion steam ferry is also under revision . The Nordstern screw steamer was decommissioned at the end of 2017 due to a boiler damage and is now waiting to be restored. The screw steamer Prinz Heinrich was put back into service in 2018 after years of restoration work. For the dismantling from diesel to steam drive, two steam engines from 1922 were acquired from the Netherlands, along with a steam boiler from Scotland. The first test drives were successful. In addition to the real steamers, there is the Goethe on the Rhine (until 2008 a steamship operated by a steam engine), a motorized bike ship. The Goethe was up to the conversion (active) to diesel operation the largest paddle steamer in the world. Another steamship, whose steam engine was also replaced by a diesel engine, was the Diessen on the Ammersee . The same fate befell Ludwig Fessler on the Chiemsee . Your machine was reused in Neuchâtel instead of the original Escher-Wyss machine.
In Germany, various steam engines are still preserved as museum pieces, some of which can still be powered by compressed air (or electric motors). There are also several completely preserved steamships: The Elbe steamer Riesa is located on the outside area of the inland shipping museum in Oderberg . The paddle steam tug Ruthof / Érsekcsanád remained in the Danube Shipping Museum in Regensburg . Also preserved are the tug steamers Württemberg (as an independent ship museum ) in Magdeburg , as well as Oscar Huber in the Museum of German Inland Shipping in Duisburg . The Technoseum in Mannheim houses the completely preserved steamship Mainz . The LWL-Industriemuseum Waltrop owns the ready-to-drive steamship Nixe .
The steam engines of the Bohemia and Germania can be viewed in the Deutsches Museum in Munich , those of the Marie (Escher-Wyss; Ammersee) and the Luitpold (Chiemsee) in the German Museum of Technology in Berlin . In the Elbe Shipping Museum in Lauenburg, the steam engine of Emperor Franz Josef is on display, as is the inclined steam engine of the ferry steamer Bad Schandau . The steam engine of the Elbe steamer Libussa is shown in the permanent exhibition of the Museum of German Inland Shipping . The German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven also houses parts of another Elbe steamer, namely the central nave, steam engine and paddle wheels of Crown Prince Wilhelm .
The steam engine of the DS Bad Schandau as well as the steam engine of the tugboat Helene and the engine of an Elbe ferry have been preserved in the Dresden Transport Museum. The Diessen steam engine has been preserved in the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg. Also preserved are the steam engines of the former Elbe steamers Schmilka and Junge Pionier , as well as their paddle wheels in the Laubegast shipyard. From the steamship Andechs only the shell could be obtained as a club ship on the Ammersee . The same applies to the steamship Seeperle , which has been preserved as a restaurant in Seeburg .

The largest fleets are those of Lake Geneva ( passenger shipping on Lake Geneva ) and those of Lake Lucerne ( shipping company for Lake Lucerne ) with five steamers each, with the Lake Geneva fleet having three more wheelboats (formerly steamers, now motor ships). After a steamship celebrated its second maiden voyage in 2014 after the restoration work on the Neuchâtel was completed, another steamship, the Spiez screw steamer, is to be put back into operation on Lake Thun in spring 2020 . In addition, the Pro Dampfer association is currently campaigning for the construction of a new eco-paddle steamer, which should operate on the Rhine and Untersee in 2020 if possible .
The steamship Wilhelm Tell , which is used there as a restaurant ship, is moored on Lake Lucerne near Lucerne . The steam engine and paddle wheels are still built in and have been preserved in excellent condition. Another steamship, the DS Friborg from Lake Neuchâtel is also used as a restaurant in Delley-Portalban . Of this, however, only the hull has been preserved. The former steamship Genève is currently out of service on Lake Geneva.
The Pilatus steam engine and paddle wheels are on display in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne . The bow is preserved in Vitznau . The Verkehrshaus also houses the completely preserved Rigi steamship (recently restored) with the original engine installed, as well as the Escher-Wyss steam engine that has since been installed. The Helvétie steam engine can be viewed in the Musée du Léman in Nyon . In the steam center Winterthur two ship steam engines from Escher-Wyss are exhibited. It concerns the steam engine of Giessbach III from Lake Brienz and the engine of the screw steamer Lützelau from Lake Zurich.
