history

First years

In 1927, the newly married John Willard Marriott and Alice Marriott secured exclusive A&W franchise rights for the US states of Washington, DC and Baltimore as well as Richmond . With $ 6,000, they and another young couple left the Utah farms to open a tiny root beer stand on lively 14th Street in the capital .

The news about tamales, chili con carne and Bar-BQ got around quickly and prompted a friend to ask what the shoppe's new hot menu was all about. With that the name Hot-Shoppes was born. He expanded by taking on in-flight catering at the old Washington Hoover Airport and supplying various cafeterias in the administrative district.

1950s to 1990s

In order to finance the rapid growth, the company went public in 1953 and sold all available shares within just two hours. In 1957 the hotel division of the company was founded; the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel , a 365-room home in Arlington , has opened. The guests registered at a counter from the car and were then - still in the car - directed to the room by the bicycle bellboy .

In the mid-1970s, the Marriott Corporation signed its first management contracts; opened their first European hotel in Amsterdam and two Great America amusement parks . In 1977, in the 50th year of its corporate history, Marriott achieved sales of $ 1 billion for the first time.

In 1993 the Marriott Corporation was split into two companies, in addition to the Marriott International Inc. , the Host Marriott Corporation was created . In the mid-1990s, Marriott continued to grow, opening its 1000th hotel in Hawaii in 1995 . The company also took over the luxury chain Ritz-Carlton and the Renaissance Hotel Group. Franchising became more important: several new brands were bought or established themselves.

Development since 2000

In April 2000, Marriott opened the 2000th hotel in Tampa, Florida. It opened just ten days after the death of company co-founder Alice Marriott, who died at the age of 92. An economic downturn and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks (which also destroyed the Marriott World Trade Center ) plunged the entire travel and hotel industries into recession.

A widely respected spokesman for the hotel industry, Bill Marriott reached out to the White House to get President Bush to take part in a tourism promotion campaign. On January 7, 2002, the New York Marriott Financial Center Hotel celebrated its reopening. Shortly thereafter, on the 29th of the same month, the new Ritz Carlton Battery Park opened its doors - both hotels are located in Lower Manhattan .

At the end of 2004, Marriott International sold the Ramada International brand and all rights to Cendant , the North American rights holder of the Ramada brand and thus the sole owner.

One of the special features of the hotel group is that in addition to the hotel Bible, the Book of Mormon is displayed in the hotels , which goes back to the fact that the founders belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

On September 20, 2008, the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad was bombed . At least 60 people died and more than 200 were injured. In 2003 there was an attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003, in which twelve people died. In July 2009 there was another attack on the Marriott Hotel Jakarta and the Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, which also belongs to Marriott International.

Marriott's loyalty program is called Marriott Rewards . The points collected can be used in addition to rewards and a. can be exchanged for miles from Lufthansa Miles & More or points with Payback .

In February 2012 the Marriott Group announced the opening of the world's highest hotel with a height of 335 meters in Dubai . The JW Marriott Marquis Dubai opened on February 27, 2013.

With the acquisition of the South African hotel group Protea Hospitality Group on April 1, 2014, Marriott International became the largest hotel group on the African continent .

In November 2015, Marriott International announced an agreement to acquire Starwood . The merger, completed in September 2016, creates the largest hotel group in the world.

criticism

In October 2007, Marriott International, together with other international hotel chains, was awarded the negative Big Brother Award in the consumer protection category “for collecting and centrally storing highly personal information about their guests without their knowledge” .

Data leak at the Marriott subsidiary Starwood

In December 2018 it became known that strangers had gained access to a database of the Marriott subsidiary Starwood between 2014 and mid-September 2018 and also stole data in the process. Among other things, hotels of the Sheraton, Westin and Le Méridien brands are affected . The data leak affects 500 million guests from over 6,000 hotels in over 120 countries. Particularly sensitive personal data such as names, e-mail addresses, dates of birth, passport numbers, account information and credit card numbers with expiry dates were also compromised.
