    National Assembly of South Africa

    The National Assembly ( English National Assembly ) is a chamber in the parliamentary bicameral system of South Africa . It is based in the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town .

    The National Assembly is elected according to proportional representation, with half of the 400 members entering parliament via national lists and provincial lists.

    The second chamber of parliament is the National Council of Provinces . From 1994 to 1997 this was the Senate .

    The National Assembly was first elected in 1994. The House of Assembly previously held this function.

    Offices

    The Speaker of the National Assembly has been chaired by the ANC politician Thandi Modise since 2019 ; her successor in office has been Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula , also ANC , since August 19, 2021 . The opposition leader has been John Steenhuisen from the Democratic Alliance since October 2019 .

    Fire incident in January 2022

    A major fire in the parliament building complex on January 2, 2022 destroyed the session room of the National Assembly.
