Qualification basics
Each NOK could nominate up to three athletes who ran the IAAF qualification time of 20.55 seconds (A standard) in a competition held during the qualification time. Should no athlete from a NOC achieve the A standard, the NOC concerned could nominate an athlete who had managed the B standard of 20.65 seconds. Regardless of the running times, the NOKs whose athletes did not achieve the A or B standard could nominate an athlete.
Prelims
Seven preliminary runs were carried out. The first three athletes per run qualified for the semifinals. In addition, the three fastest times, the so-called lucky losers , made it through. The directly qualified athletes are highlighted in light blue, the lucky losers in light green.
The fastest time in the heats was 20.28 s in race six. During this time, the Ecuadorian Álex Quiñónez improved the national record. The slowest time it took to reach the semi-finals was 20.72 seconds. During this time, Kei Takase from Japan and the Canadian Jared Connaughton reached the next round in race seven.

final

Wind: +0.4 m / s
All three Jamaicans had qualified for the final. The starting field was completed by one athlete each from Ecuador, France, the Netherlands, South Africa and the USA. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt was a big favorite on this route, despite being defeated by Yohan Blake in the Jamaican Olympic qualifications. Bolt won in 19.32 seconds and became the first ever athlete to repeat the Olympic double (100 and 200 meters ) four days after his 100 meter win . For Bolt it was the fifth total Olympic gold medal.
Yohan Blake and Warren Weir completed the Jamaican triple triumph. Only US athletes in 1904 , 1932 and 1952 achieved a triple success in this discipline over 200 meters .
With 19.44 s, Blake ran the fastest time ever that was not enough to win. Blake, who also won the silver medal in the 100 meters, is the third athlete to win silver in the 100 and 200 meters at the same Olympic Games after the American Nate Cartmell (1904) and Frank Fredericks from Namibia ( 1992 and 1996 ).
It was only for the third time after 1980 and 2000 that there were no medals for a US athlete at the Olympic Games.
