IAAF Rule 168.7 - Skipping a hurdle |
final
August 6, 2012, 8:45 p.m.
All three Americans qualified for the finals. There was also a participant from the Dominican Republic, Great Britain, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.
In this final, the Olympic champions of three games met each other. In 2000 and 2008 the American Angelo Taylor won gold, in 2004 the winner was Félix Sánchez, who came from the Dominican Republic. The American Kerron Clement, world champion from 2007 and 2009 , Michael Tinsley, who had won the US Olympic qualifications, and the reigning world champion David Greene from Great Britain also started with good chances .
The race was initially led by Sánchez, Taylor and Puerto Rican Javier Culson. Taylor had moved forward slightly, but lost his rhythm on the eighth hurdle. On the ninth hurdle, Sánchez took the lead, closely followed by Culson. On the home straight, Sánchez had the greatest stamina and won the gold medal in the time of 47.63 s, which was identical to his winning time in 2004. Tinsley worked his way forward on the last meters and finished second before Culson. World Champion Greene was fourth, Taylor fifth.
Kevin Young Olympic record and world record from the year 1992 of 46.78 s remained completely unharmed even at these games.
Javier Culson won Puerto Rico's first medal in this discipline.
