Pailhès ( Occitan Palhèrs ) is a French commune with 472 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region .
location
Pailhès is located on the upper reaches of the Lèze river at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level. d. M. The closest town is Pamiers , about 18 kilometers (driving distance) to the east ; the city of Toulouse is just under 70 kilometers to the north. The town and its surroundings are part of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park .

In the 19th century, the place usually had around 1,000 inhabitants. The increasing mechanization of agriculture in the first half of the 20th century led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows in the 1980s and 1990s.
economy
Pailhès lived to a large extent from agriculture; the place itself functions to this day as a small regional trade, craft and service center. Tourism also plays a certain role in the town's income in the form of holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
The Barony of Pailhès played an important role in the region until the French Revolution . It formed an exclave of Languedoc in the county of Foix and was subordinate to the then dissolved diocese of Rieux until the Concordat of 1801 .
Attractions

- The castle ( château ) of Pailhès ( 43 ° 6 ′ 2 ″ N , 1 ° 26 ′ 42 ″ E ) stands on a rocky promontory of the Plantaurel massif , a northern foothill of the Pyrenees , near a crossroads where the roads meet from Foix to Lézat-sur-Lèze and from Pamiers to Saint-Girons . Its origins go back to the 12th century, but its current condition largely corresponds to renovations or new construction measures in the 15th and 17th / 18th centuries. Century.
