Pawel Anatoljewitsch Kolobkow ( Russian Павел Анатольевич Колобков ; born September 22, 1969 in Moscow ) is a Russian sword fencer and politician . From the late 1980s he was one of the best fencers in the world for almost 20 years .

Career

Kolobkow started fencing at the age of twelve. Under the influence of his first coach Boris Nikolaitschuk , he grew up to be a top athlete.

He celebrated his first international success in 1988 at the Summer Olympics in Seoul when he won the bronze medal with the Soviet epee team. Four years later, the team of the United Team , the joint team of the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States , repeated this success. Kolobkow crowned his participation with a silver medal in the individual competition. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , he won the silver medal in the epee team competition together with Alexander Beketow and Valeri Sakharevich . And at the 2000 Games in Sydney , Kolobkow was Olympic champion with a victory in the final bout against the French Hugues Obry . He could not defend this title at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . After losing to the Chinese Wang Lei in the semifinals , he clearly won the battle for the bronze medal against the Frenchman Éric Boisse and won the bronze medal. In addition to his success at the Olympic Games, Kolobkow was six-time world champion between 1991 and 2005.

In 2016, Kolobkov became Russian Minister of Sports.
