Real Love ( English True love ) is the title of a composition of the British musician John Lennon . This could not be completed until his death in 1980. However, it was revised in 1995 by the other three Beatles and released as a single in 1996. Like the 1995 single Free as a Bird , it is considered a virtual reunion of the Beatles.
origin
John Lennon had left the music business for five years in 1975 after the release of the best-of album Shaved Fish . But this withdrawal from the public had by no means led to musical inactivity. Lennon composed numerous song fragments in his New York apartment and recorded many demo recordings on simple audio cassettes.
Real Love , which was initially called Real Life , was originally part of a larger composition, from which Lennon later created two other pieces: Watching the Wheels and I'm Stepping Out . The remnants of this formed the framework for the later Real Love in terms of melody and text . Lennon was unable to complete the song until his death in 1980. Just like Free as a Bird , Real Love was revised by the three then still living members of the band Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr . Jeff Lynne acted as co-producer .
Publications
Real Love was released several times in different versions, which differed greatly depending on the status of the demo recording. It was first released in 1988 on the soundtrack of the documentary Imagine: John Lennon . This version was recorded with a guitar and appeared again in 2004 on the Lennon compilation Acoustic . The song was heavily revised for the Beatles Anthology and finally appeared in 1996 on the album Anthology 2 and as a single. It was the second single, after Free as a Bird from 1995, that the Beatles released as part of the Anthology trilogy. Real Love reached fourth place in the British charts and eleventh in the US. A barely edited version with piano accompaniment from 1980 appeared on the John Lennon Anthology , and in a slightly shortened form on Wonsaponatime , a selection from the John Lennon Anthology .
