The Romanian U-21 national football team is a selection team of Romanian football players. It is subordinate to the Federația Română de Fotbal , the Romanian football association, and represents it at the U-21 level, in friendly matches against the national teams of other national associations, but also at the European championship of the European continental association UEFA or the FIFA World Cup. Eligible to play are players who have not yet reached the age of 21 and who are Romanian citizens. In tournaments, the age at the first qualifying game is decisive.

history

At the U-21 Euro 1998 , the Romanians were hosts and thus qualified for the first and so far only time for the European Championship finals. Since the competition started in knockout mode at that time, the tournament was already over for the Romanians after the quarter-finals, as in the first round. They separated from the Netherlands 1: 2, which meant the end when they first participated.

For the 2006 tournament , the team was drawn into Group 1. There it met the Netherlands, the Czech Republic , Macedonia , Finland and Armenia . After a good start with victories over Finland and Macedonia, the disillusionment quickly followed with a 1: 4 defeat against the Czech Republic. After a 2-0 win against rivals from the Netherlands, the team was well on the way to qualifying for the European Championship. But only five days after this victory a 0-1 defeat against outsider Macedonia followed. Although the Romanians did not lose any of the following games, neither the Czechs nor the Dutch showed themselves naked, so that the team only achieved third place and missed the necessary second place by two points.

Since the next European Championship after the EM in 2006 did not take place two years later, as usual, but took place in 2007 , the corresponding qualification was played out in a rapid process. Starting with a preliminary round, over a short group stage with three teams and the play-off games. Romania needed to get into the group stage first. The teams from Germany and Northern Ireland were drawn to the Eastern Europeans . There was only one game against each team, so the teams had one away and one home rights. In the first game on August 16, 2006, the team clearly won against the Northern Irish team 3-0. The German team presented itself less clearly, winning "only" 3-2 on the 2nd matchday against the island footballers from Northern Ireland. The last game on September 5, 2006 between Romania and Germany had to decide for a place in the play-offs. The BRD selection clearly prevailed with 5: 1.

In qualifying for Euro 2009, they met France , Wales , Bosnia-Herzegovina and Malta . To get into the play-off round, victory in this group had to be achieved. On the first match day there was a 1-1 draw against France. The second leg also ended in a draw. So the favorites of these groups took each other's points. Since France had already suffered a defeat against Wales and had to share the points with Romania beforehand, the last matchday of this group on September 9, 2008 was decisive, the French met Bosnia-Herzegovina and won this game 1-0. In the final group game Romania needed a win against Wales, but ultimately lost 3-0 to the group winners in front of their home crowd.
