The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 1996/97 was the 34th season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football. It was started on August 15, 1996 with the 1st matchday of the qualifying round and completed on May 21, 1997 with the 18th and final matchday of the relegation round.
In the 1996/97 season, the second highest division was played in three stages, as in the previous season. In the 1st stage, the league was played in a qualifying round (Turkish Kademe Grupları ) in five groups of ten teams each with home and away games. After the end of the 1st stage, the first two teams from all groups were included in a common group, the promotion round (Turkish Yükselme Grubu ), and played here for promotion to the 1st Lig . The remaining teams in the five groups of the qualifying round played in an unchanged group constellation now in a relegation round (Turkish Düşme Grupları ) against relegation to the 3rd Lig . Both the promotion round and the relegation round represented the 2nd stage and were played with two legs.
The teams in the first two places of the promotion round rose directly to the 1st Lig and the last two teams of all groups in the relegation round relegated to the 3rd Lig. While the points from the qualifying round were not taken into the promotion round, they were counted unchanged in the relegation round. The 3rd stage was carried out in the form of a play-off round. The teams ranked from three to five and all the promotion round group winners of all descent groups should in the knockout system play out the third and final intermediates.
The first stage began with the start of the season on August 15, 1996 and ended with the winter break on December 10, 1996. The following second stage then started on January 14, 1997 and ended on May 12, 1997. The third and last stage in which the play-offs were played was played from May 20, 1997 to May 25, 1997.
At the beginning of the season, the 37 teams remaining from the previous season were the two relegated teams from the 1st Lig Kayserispor , Eskişehirspor , Karşıyaka SK and the ten promoted teams from the third-class 3rd Lig Bingölspor , Hopaspor , İskenderunspor , Ankara Demirspor , Ünyespor , Muğlaspor , Kuşadasıspor , İnegölspor , Nişantaşıspor , Beylerbeyi SK have been added.
The season ended KDÇ Karabükspor as champion and took part in the competition in the top Turkish league after four years . Second place in the table was occupied by Kayserispor and thus managed to return to the 1st Lig . With the play-off victory, the first division relegated Şekerspor achieved participation in the 1st league and thus managed to participate in the 1st league again after a twenty-four year absence. In the play-off final, the club prevailed with a 4-2 Victory on penalties against Adanaspor . At the end of the season Nişantaşıspor , Anadoluhisarı İdman Yurdu from Group 1, Muğlaspor , Balıkesirspor from Group 2, İnegölspor , Alanyaspor from Group 3, Ünyespor from Group 4 and İskenderunspor , Bingölspor from Group 5 were all relegated .
During the trip to the away game against PTT on January 12, 1997, the Erzincanspor team bus collided with a transporter of hazardous materials. Four people were fatally injured in this accident, 24 people suffered injuries, ten of whom were serious. Since the club could not continue to participate in the game due to the many injured players, Erzincanspor was exempted from this by the Turkish Football Association and all remaining games were rated with a 3-0 defeat. Erzincanspor was kept in the 2nd Lig for the coming season, so instead of the usual ten relegated teams, nine teams were relegated this season.
The newcomer Hopaspor Kulübü , or Hopaspor for short , changed his name to Artvin Hopaspor Kulübü , or Artvin Hopaspor for short .
The top scorer in the league was Nail Uğur Timurcioğlu from Kartalspor with 22 goals .
