TIM is the third studio album by the Swedish DJ and producer Avicii . It was released on June 6, 2019 as the first posthumous studio album via " Geffen Records " and its major label " Universal Music " worldwide. The Scandinavian department of the " EMI Group " acted primarily as the publisher . Collaborations can be found with Chris Martin and the Imagine Dragons , among others . The title of the album is based on Avicii's real first name. The selection of the songs was made by the family, his studio partners and his management. All of them are songs that, according to statements, he would have worked on in the months before his death, some of which were planned for his third studio album or part 2 and part 3 of his Avīci EP series. 75 to 80 percent completed, various co-authors took over the completion, while his longtime studio partner Carl Falk acted in the role as executive producer of the album. The album was announced on April 5, 2019. The first single, SOS , sung by Aloe Blacc , was released on April 10, 2019. On May 9, 2019, the song Tough Love with vocals by Vargas & Lagola followed as a second pre-release. Parallel to the album, the song Heaven , which was created in collaboration with Chris Martin, was the third and final singles on the studio album.

background

Until April 20, 2018: The Avīci EPs

Tim Bergling aka Avicii

On August 10, 2017, Avicii released the first part of a three-part EP series, which should serve the release of his third studio album. They should be titled Avīci (01) to Avīci (03) . He said that he put the focus on "a mix of old and new songs" on this project. In particular, songs should play a role here, "which fans asked about again and again, but which are ultimately mixed with songs they have never heard before". In an interview with Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1 , Avicii said that the release of the third EP would be the third album after True and Stories . He took a three-month break in Africa to gain inspiration and time to brainstorm.

At the end of January 2018, he announced on the sixth edition of his radio show Avicii FM that he was back in Los Angeles and would now start working on his upcoming EPs:

“I'm back in LA now and I've pretty much started working on the EP. I will keep you guys up to date here as I progress with the production of the EP. For now, I'll try to decide which songs are going to be on the EP, because I have a lot of songs that I haven't started producing yet. I'll pick the songs and then start a series of studio sessions in March that I'm really looking forward to. I will sit down there with several well-known production teams with whom I have already produced several songs. "

- Avicii : Avicii FM # 006

From March 2018 he shared his current work in the studio on various social networks. Neil Jacobson of Avicii's label "Geffen Records", on which the first EP was released, told Variety that "the joint productions produced his best works in years." He described Avicii as "inspired" and "enthusiastic". It would have even gotten to the point during this time that they had to add “closing times” to the studio sessions, as Avicii was so tied to work that he “sometimes worked 16 hours without a break”. The videos showed him with Noonie Bao , Carl Falk and Joakim Berg in the studio. Parts of the genesis of the songs Fades Away and Hold the Line , which can now also be found on the album, can be seen. At the beginning of April 2018 he invited the British musician Joseph "Joe" Janiak to his studio in Los Angeles. Together with him and Carl Falk he recorded a number of songs, several of which would later become part of the tracklist. On April 7, 2018, the last evening before a planned break from producing, he wrote the song Never Leave Me sung by Janiak .

On April 8, 2018, he visited Muscat , the capital of Arab Oman . Not only did he want to go on vacation here, but also collect inspiration, as the Arabic music impressed him. During his journey, he communicated with the Swedish musician Vincent Pontare , with whom he had worked several times since the beginning of his career. Pontare said Avicii was "excited" about the stay and that they would "finish the album [after his stay]". To explore the country further, he extended his vacation for another week. In the meantime he stayed in constant contact with his record company and arranged for his demos to be sent to different labels and artists in order to find candidates for the vocal division. He instructed that when making a choice they should always be guided by “what is interesting for the audience and not what is“ big ”and attracts attention.” Some of the notes that he saved in his cell phone at the time said something like that from “Spread positivity through my music, in messages. And enjoy the success but not the materialistic success. "," Bring the artists to the fore "and" Bring emotions into the song, because the emotion in which the song is written is what it will convey. "

From April 20, 2018: Death of Aviciis and rumors

Nicky Romero , a good friend of Avicii, played the final version of Heaven for the first time shortly after his death

On April 20, 2018, Avicii was found dead on the estate of a member of the Omani royal family. This came as a surprise to his entire circle, as he had been in the best of shape for over a year. The producers involved in the creation of the album said that at the time of his death he had over 200 unreleased songs "on hold". Some of them have been completed, others are still in development. Most cheat a degree of completion of 75 to 80 percent.

The question of the whereabouts of productions that Aviciis had started dominated various forums and music magazines. Lists of all unreleased songs, confirmed collaborations and bootlegs were created. Mixes of unreleased tracks appeared on video and music platforms, and alleged title lists and leaks from the previously unreleased EP Avīci (02) also circulated on the Internet. For the time being, however, no posthumous release has been officially confirmed. Neil Johnson confirmed, however, that he was in contact with the family and would like to initiate a meeting of all concerned to reflect the possibilities.

For the first time on April 27, 2018, the Dutch DJ and producer Nicky Romero , who had already participated in Avicii's track I Could be the One in 2013 , played a full version of the song Heaven , which was produced with the musician Carl Falk during the Stories era. While Avicii has so far only presented the demo version sung by Simon Aldred on his live performances, Romero played the final version, which contains vocals by Coldplay singer Chris Martin . A short time later, the new version leaked with Martin on the Internet. Rumors of an obvious single release spread.

In August 2018, Carl Falk, who could be seen in various recordings of the studio sessions, also spoke up via Instagram . In a statement under a picture that shows him and Avicii as well as the song Heaven , he explains that the past day would have been "difficult" for him and that he had "tried somehow" to "finish these songs". He also emphasizes Avicii's perfectionism. It should be released posthumously together with the third album.

At the end of 2018, the American singer Aloe Blacc , who started the song Wake Me Up with Avicii , gave an interview with the “ Daily Star ” magazine . In this he reported that "there were still a few songs left" and he was convinced that "the record label was working with his parents and the estate administration" to "find a way to bring these unreleased songs to the public".

April 2019: confirmation and announcement

In early April 2019, almost a year after his death, a press release was released stating that Avicii had been working on an album before his death and that its co-authors have now been brought in to complete this work. This team of writers and producers completed the album, which contained "elements of psychedelia, Arabic music, sounds of the Caribbean and more". They used detailed notes on his cell phone and computer, some of which were only written a few days before his death. Christopher Thordson, a member of his management, took on the task of collecting the notes. He said that Avicii wrote down "very specific information about the music." As an incentive for release, Avicii's father, Klas Bergling, said that he and “Tim's mother decided” that they “wanted to give the music to his fans, to everyone who wanted to hear it.” They “don't want it to be locked up somewhere . "

At the same time as the press release, a video called Avicii - The Story Behind The Album “TIM” appeared on the official Avicii YouTube channel . Here excerpts from previous studio work are shown and commented and honored by various contributors. Klas Bergling explains how the decision was made to bring the album to the public.

In the track list of the album, 16 possible songs were selected. " Universal " manager Per Sundin said that the tracklist was limited to 12 songs, as some experienced too much development after Avicii's death. It was also announced that the collaboration with Chris Martin Heaven would also be included. The release date has already been set here on June 6, 2019. At the same time, the first single SOS and its collaboration by Aloe Blacc were announced for April 10, 2019.

April 2019 to May 2019: First single releases and track list

The first single, SOS , was released on April 10, 2019 , which was created together with Kristoffer Fogelmark and Albin Nedler during the Stories session after Pure Grinding . They finished the track after Avicii's death and contacted the American singer Aloe Blacc , who had previously been discussed as a singer , for the vocal track that was still missing at the time .

The second single followed on May 9, 2019 and is titled Tough Love . The song leaked to the Internet a day before it was released. Tough Love comes from a studio session that took place in March 2016 and was written by Avicii with Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare , who make up the music project Vargas & Lagola . These were also given as a feature along with Pontare's wife Agnes Carlsson . The song is melodically based on the sounds of Indian music.

On May 10, 2019, parallel to the global release of Tough Love, the album was released with the option to pre-order in various download portals, including iTunes and Amazon . The tracklist was kept secret at this time, but not that only 12 of the 16 originally selected songs made it onto the album. On the same day, hackers got the final tracklist for the album and announced it in the reddit forum .

June 2019: album release and last single

One day before the album was released, the song Heaven , which played a major role in the story of Tim , was announced as the third single. It was released on June 6, 2019 at 5 p.m. Central European time zone, parallel to the studio album. A series of videos appeared on Avicii's YouTube channel between morning and noon on June 6th, shedding light on the background of each song. Here the co-producers took their positions and told them what influences there were on the songs or which parts of the song challenged Avicii. Furthermore, a review of the The Cube campaign was thrown back with Heaven as background music.

Origin and Personnel

Vincent Pontare and Salem Al Fakir , the songwriters of three songs included

Over 33 songwriters were involved in the creation of the studio album. In addition to the featuring artists, musicians such as Kristoffer Fogelmark (singer of, among others, More Than You Know by Axwell Λ Ingrosso ), Carl Falk (songwriter of, among others, Starships by Nicki Minaj ) as well as Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare (Vargas & Lagola, songwriter almost all Axwell Λ Ingrosso songs). Six different producers supported Avicii in the studio and finished the tracks after his death. In addition to Ash Pouruni and Albin Nedler, Carl Falk, who has stood by Avicii several times in the course of his career, also worked hard for Tim . He described the posthumous work on the album to the New York Times as a collaboration with a ghost.

“During production, I try to look through someone else's eyes and hear through someone else's ears - through those of someone who is not here. It was really hard not to constantly criticize yourself. Would he like it? What would he have done? "

- Carl Falk : New York Times

After the songs were finished, Kevin Grainger and Julio Rodriguez Sangrador did the final mastering and mixing .

Trivia

Daniel Reynolds , singer of the song Heart Upon My Sleeve
  • The idea for the song Peace of Mind came about during a conversation between Avicii and Vargas & Lagola about the constant urge to be online. The text is socially critical on this topic. Already after the first demos, Bergling saw it as a kind of intro song.
  • SOS contains an interpolation of the song No Scrubs by TLC , which was written by Tameka Cottle, Kandi Burruss, and Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs.
  • Tough Love contains a sample of the song Banarasiya from the soundtrack of the Hindi film Raanjhanaa , which was composed by AR Rahman .
  • Freak contains melodic similarities to the song Stay with Me by Sam Smith , which in turn is based on the song I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty . The chorus also contains a “whistle”, which is a sample from the song Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto from 1961. He came across the song by chance while browsing YouTube.
  • In Bad Reputation Avicii traits wanted to incorporate African music. Earlier versions of the song were based on traditional Arabic sounds.
  • Avicii wrote the pre-refrain of Ain't a Thing alone. In particular, he wanted to achieve an increase in the arc of suspense.
  • The basic structure of Hold the Line was sent to Avicii from Arizona as a demo, whereupon he invited her to the studio. Over 20 different drops were created for the song.
  • The working title of Excuse Me Mr. Sir was Freak . He wanted to venture into new territory with the song and incorporated stylistic devices from a wide variety of musicians, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Crazy Town .
  • With Heart Upon My Sleeve one song is included, which is already on the list of titles of his debut album True was to be found. However, the choice fell on a finished instrumental version instead of the vocal version that was still in progress and was played at the 2013 Ultra Music Festival. This was created in collaboration with Daniel Reynolds , the singer of the US indie band Imagine Dragons and their guitarist Daniel Wayne Sermon during a joint session in Avicii's studio. After the vocal version was never completed, the Imagine Dragons completed the song for Tim's tracklist .
  • Never Leave Me was the last song Avicii wrote. It was made just a day before he left for Oman.
  • The song Fade Away was written around the line “Don't you love it how it all just fade away”. Noonie Bao was not contacted for vocals for the final version until after Avicii's death. John Janiak lent his voice to the demo version.
  • On July 29, 2019, a supposed employee of "Universal Sweden" shared a picture in the internet forum reddit that showed the track list of a remix album by Tim , which should appear shortly. In addition to the already published remixes by Laidback Luke and Tiësto, this should also contain remixes by Jay Hardway , Martin Garrix and Otto Knows , among others . In addition, the unreleased songs Our Love and Forever Yours (as a remix version), which have been in great demand since his Ultra Music Festival appearance, were on the list. After several magazines reported about this and a hype arose within a very short time , the author of the picture admitted that this was a hoax and that it was only intended to serve as a prank on a friend.

The Cube campaign

On May 24, 2019 it was announced that a campaign would start on June 1, 2019 as part of the album. This was called "Step into the cube". These were cubes that were erected in different cities around the world. Inside the cubes was a screen where you should place your hand, after which you were connected to another cube. The same song from the album can then be heard in both cubes.

As a background to it all, it was explained that many stories had been told in the past few years in which music had connected people and helped them with their health. Avicii would also have played an important role in many people's lives. For example, strangers would have become good friends through his music alone. And this is exactly where the project starts. By listening to the new Avicii music in different locations, fans from all over the world share this experience.

The cubes were erected in several cities. They could be entered for the first time on June 1, 2019.

Title & artwork

Naming

Signature of the artist

The studio album is titled Tim and thus the real first name Aviciis. This was chosen at the request of the family to pay tribute to him . This excludes the previous EP series as well as the True Stories series and presents a stand-alone studio album. In an interview broadcast on NBC , Aloe Blacc said that "you hear Tim instead of Avicii in these recordings." This would also have played a major role in choosing the title.

The album cover is a gray colored square with a portrait of Avicii in the middle . Above the photo you can see the musician's logo, which is formed by two black triangles . These represent the A and V of his artist name and have accompanied him through a significant part of his career. Not only was the logo to be found on the publications and online presences, but also appeared during its live performances and merchandise products. To the left of the photo is the year of publication 2019 and the title Tim on the right . Below is Avicii's name in the form of his second logo, which has been in existence since 2011.

In the booklet you can see a picture of Avicii on a black background next to the title list. A lettering quotes one of the notes he saved on his mobile phone during his stay in Oman:

“Spread positivity through my music, in messages. And enjoy the success but not the materialistic success. "

Single releases

SOS

Aloe Blacc , singer from SOS

On April 10, 2019, the first single SOS was released , which was made together with Kristoffer Fogelmark and Albin Nedler. At the same time as the single, the official music video was released, showing memories and reviews of Avicii's fans. At the same time, the YouTube channel “Proximity” also published a lyric video. The American singer Aloe Blacc contributed the singing posthumously.

They wrote the song together shortly after their first joint track Pure Grinding was produced during the Stories session. After the instrumental was finished, Fogelmark, Nedler and Avicii discussed who should take over the vocal part. The name Aloe Blacc was also mentioned at this time . He interprets the lines SOS as a description of Avicii's “own struggles” on the one hand, but also as a kind of gift to people who actually need help and cannot find the right words for it. Fogelmark and Nedler describe the song as "dry" in the verses and "atmospheric" in the drop. Originally, Avicii is said to have provided the melody of the main part for another song, but thanks to a flash of inspiration from Nedler, it finally ended up in the basic structure of SOS . After Avicii's death, Fogelmark and Nedler finished the track and invited Blacc to the studio to posthumously contribute the vocals. Melodically, the song is loosely based on the song No Scrubs by the US trio TLC .

A few weeks after the single was released, a remix by Dutch DJ and producer Laidback Luke was released . He received the order to remix the song, because Avicii counts his music to his greatest influences and was able to use Laidback Luke's forum and thus his personal feedback as a great stepping stone well before his breakthrough. He would have always seen him as a mentor and expressed the wish one day to be able to release a remix he had produced. Laidback Luke took this opportunity to produce a tribute remix in which he processed sounds from some of Avicii's first successes ( My Feelings for You , Levels ) in this one.

The song received positive reviews in particular for its emotive lyrics, which also describe Avicii's own doubts. Kat Bein from “ Billboard ” magazine also emphasized that the song “definitely has Avicii's melodic structures and sounds, even if the most important parts were mixed with new elements”. These were compared to "almost dancehall-influenced beats".

SOS topped the charts in several countries, including Avicii's home country Sweden and neighboring Finland. The single reached top 10 positions in 16 other countries; For example, it moved up to 8th place in Germany, 6th in Great Britain and 8th in Australia. In addition, the streaming numbers on the Spotify streaming platform were over 130 million after around a month.

Tough love

Agnes Carlsson , singer of Tough Love

The second single from the upcoming studio album was released on May 9, 2019. This is called Tough Love and was created in collaboration with the Swedish musician duo Vargas & Lagola , consisting of Vincent Pontare and Salem Al Fakir, who were involved in Silhouettes , You Make Me and Friend of Mine , among others . Several verified lyric videos appeared in parallel with the song release. The official music video followed on May 14, 2019. This was staged by choreographer Fredrik Benke Rydman (director of Måns Zelmerlöw's ESC performance with Heroes, among others ). The Swedish dancer Ellen Lindblad and the German dancer Daniel Asamoah can be seen performing a choreography on a coast.

Tough Love comes from a studio session that took place in Austin, Texas in March 2016 . Various demo versions were already produced here, some of which could also be heard in live streams. At the time, the song was nicknamed In Your Arms . He already received support with songwriting from Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare, who finished the song for the single release after Avicii's death. In an interview they said that Avicii orientated itself melodically on the sounds of Indian music. A violin sample from the Hindi film Raanjhanaa is responsible for a decisive mood on which the song builds . In a text message, Avicii expressed the wish that the song would be sung by a "real couple".

“This number has to be a duet. The coolest thing would be if it was taken over by a real couple. Or from a couple who have worked together often enough to pass almost as a real couple. "

- Avicii : personal message to Vincent Pontare

In the course of this wish, Pontare contributed the vocals together with his wife Agnes Carlsson.

While Emily Zemler from “ Rolling Stone ” describes the song as an “upbeat” number, “Billboard” magazine perceived it as a “summery, rousing dance-pop track”.

In addition to top 10 placements in New Zealand, Norway and Sweden, the song also made it into the German, Dutch and British single charts, among others.

Heaven

Chris Martin , singer from Heaven

On June 6, 2019, the song Heaven was released as the third single parallel to the release of Tim . It was created in collaboration with the British singer, songwriter and composer Chris Martin , with whom he already recorded the song True Believer for his second album Stories . An official lyric video was also released at the same time.

The song was written in May 2014 together with Chris Martin during a joint studio session. This also served the creation of the songs A Sky Full of Stars and Hymn for the Weekend of the studio album Ghost Stories by the rock-pop band Coldplay , of which Martin is a member. The song was first played during Avicii's performance at the Future Music Festival 2015.

In March 2015, Avicii presented the song at the Ultra Music Festival 2015 in a different version, which includes vocals from Cherry Ghost frontman Simon Aldred (singer of Waiting for Love ). In May 2015, he commented on this in the 37 episode of the Le7els podcast and said that he had the feeling that Aldred would do more justice to the song. In July 2015, Avicii announced in an interview with the Sunday Times that the song was still in the works. As one reason he named the perfectionism with which not only he, but also Chris Martin would be at work.

“Chris is one of the greatest artists I have ever met - and a perfectionist. We did about 600 versions of the song and he still wanted me to tweak the vocals. "

- Avicii : The Sunday Times

After the song didn't make it onto the album Stories , contrary to the expectations of his fans , he got Carl Falk aside in 2016 to rework Heaven . Among other things, Aldred's vocals were re-recorded and electric guitars were added. Avicii played this version of the track over the course of its 2016 tour.

Shortly before his death, he finally decided to revise and publish the version with Chris Martin one more time with Carl Falk . Together with a number of other partly unfinished productions, Avicii sent the song to his friend and DJ colleague Nicky Romero so that he could include it in his sets. After the Swede died shortly thereafter, Romero dedicated the premiere of the almost finished version to him at the Kingsland Festival in 2018. Among other things, he presented the track at Tomorrowland 2018 and the Ulta Music Festival in Japan. On May 27, 2018, this version was released as a leak on Soundcloud.

After Carl Falk finished the song, it was announced with the announcement of the posthumous album in April 2019 that the song Heaven would be included on it.

Timo Büschleb from the online magazine Dance-Charts described the song as consisting of “deep lyrics and a warm melody characterized by Avicii characteristics”.

Avicii's publisher Johnny Tennander of Sony / ATV Music Publishing said the lyrics prove his skills as a songwriter. He described the album as " feeling coherent and personal". The Swedish DJ and producer Alesso commented on the topic via Instagram . He saw the release of the album split. On the one hand he said he thought it was great that we could hear what he had been working on, but on the other hand it was sad because he felt it would sound different if he had finished the songs himself.

DJ Mag's Harold Heath described that when listening to the album, it became apparent that there was “a contradiction between the euphoric mood of much of the music and its darker lyrical content”. This testifies to Avicii's style of songwriting by "mixing dark and light themes". There would be "ultimately no answers in 'Tim'". Timo Büschleb from the online magazine Dance-Charts also praised the “great lyrics and impressive melodies” that Avicii packaged in this album, but noted that there were “hardly any traces of his original progressive house style”. In the absence of this, “the work for the role of a posthumous album lacks charisma”. Philipp Krause from " laut.de " explained this problem using an example:

“Instead of an Avicii album, the fan here gets an Avicii album; subtle difference. In contrast, if you listen to the extended mix of 'Seek Bromance' from 2010, you notice: Avicii's core competence was to build up moods and tensions over long passages, sometimes without any text. From this important page of his life's work you unfortunately hear nothing on “Tim”. "

- Philipp Krause : laut.de

In her comment on the album, Lena Zschirpe, author of the “Plattentests” page, highlighted the “music that lyrically celebrates life and in the next moment, with all the tragic irony, addresses dying of happiness”, in particular “the balance between electronic gimmicks and purely analog instruments like a piano or an acoustic guitar ”.

Commercial win

All of the proceeds from the album will go to the Tim Bergling Foundation , a foundation established by his family after his death and committed to mental health and suicide prevention.
