history

Alfeld University of Education - Hildesheim University

The university emerged from the Alfeld University of Education , founded in 1946 , which was moved to the largely intact Alfeld due to the destruction of Hildesheim. Under the director Hans Abmeier it recorded in the first academic year 1946/47 only 110, then several years about 50 enrollments for primary school teachers . It was supposed to provide the Catholic population in the British zone with teachers without the denomination being an admission requirement. Chaplain Hans-Otto Knackstedt taught Catholic theology, cathedral music director Otto Brauckmann the music. Under the director and Catholic philosopher Franz Flintrop , the PH was set up more independently of the Ministry of Education around 1960 and finally relocated to Hildesheim as a department of the Lower Saxony University of Education under Rector Günter Klages in 1970 .

In 1978, she was a Graduate School of Hildesheim under the rector Heinz-Wilhelm old again independently and in 1989 under the Rector of Reinhard Göllner the University of Hildesheim . Ulla Bosse was the first female president from 1998–2002.

Foundation university

On January 1, 2003, the Hildesheim University corporation passed from the sponsorship of the State of Lower Saxony to the sponsorship of the Hildesheim University Foundation under public law and became one of the first endowed universities in Germany. Four other universities in Lower Saxony have taken this step at the same time, namely the Universities of Göttingen and Lüneburg , the University of Osnabrück and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover . The president of the foundation is Wolfgang-Uwe Friedrich .

The number of students has increased continuously since 2000 and reached around 8,200 in the 2016/17 winter semester. Traditionally, one focus is the teaching degree with currently around 3,000 students (around 13% from other federal states). With around 1,300 students, the cultural sciences form the second largest group (around 65% of them from other federal states).

The proportion of women among the students is around 73%. The proportion of female professors is also well above the national average, at 43%. The equality of women and men as well as people of different social, ethnic and religious origins is an important part of the mission statement of the University of Hildesheim. Your gender equality concept was positively assessed in both rounds of the female professors' program - initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the federal states (2008 and 2013).

Course offer

The range of subjects includes courses in education and social sciences , cultural studies , language and information sciences , as well as in mathematics , natural sciences , economics and computer science .

Today, around 40 percent of students are enrolled in the “ Teaching degree at elementary, secondary and secondary schools” (Bachelor / Master) course. Around 75.8% of these students are female.

In the Faculty of Language and Information Sciences, the Bachelor programs in International Communication and Translation (IKÜ) and International Information Management (IIM) are offered. In addition, it is possible to study the master’s courses German as a Second Language / German as a Foreign Language (DaZ / DaF), International Specialized Communication - Languages ​​and Technology (SuT), International Information Management (Information Science or Linguistics and Intercultural Communication) or Media Text and Media Translation.

The university took on a pioneering role with the introduction of the internationally oriented Bachelor and Master degrees . As early as October 1, 1998, the “Information Technology (IT)” advanced training course was introduced for the first time with the “Master of Science” (M.Sc.) degree, which was successfully evaluated in 2005 and recognized as the advanced training course “Education and Information Technology ( BIT) "was reaccredited. Further courses exist in the field of humanities and cultural studies. Kulturcampus Domain Marienburg of the University of Hildesheim Foundation

The department of mathematics, natural sciences, economics and computer science offers u. a. the courses in information management and information technology, business informatics, applied computer science and the master's degree program in data analytics.

At the Institute for Computer Science, there is the offer of a young degree in the courses IMIT or Business Informatics, the first students were able to take part in regular events in 1999.

The university maintains several international partnerships. For example, the double bachelor's degree “Intercultural Communication: German-Russian Relations” is offered as a study variant of the Bachelor's degree in International Information Management (focus on applied linguistics and intercultural communication). In the course of this, the students spend a year at a partner university, the Novgorod State University. In the master’s program, the joint degree “Global Studies on Management and Information Science (GLOMIS)” is offered as a variant of the master’s degree in International Information Management - Information Science. Here the students study for one year at their home university and one year at a partner university in South Korea, either at Pai Chai University (배재대 학교) in Daejeon or Chungbuk National University (충북 대학교) in Cheongju .

Research centers

Center for Digital Change

The Center for Digital Change examines the diverse processes of digital change in a form appropriate to its complexity. To this end, the center bundles the existing research, teaching and transfer initiatives as well as collaborations at the University of Hildesheim Foundation, converts these into effective structures and continuously develops the institutional framework for the three fields of research, teaching and transfer in the field of digital change. The interlinking of these fields of activity is constitutive for the self-image of the center and shapes its profile in the environment of comparable institutions.

Center for World Music

The Center for World Music, the ethnomusic research facility of the Hildesheim University Foundation, has over 6,000 musical instruments from all over the world, around 50,000 recordings and more than 10,000 books on ethnomusicology. It stands for music-ethnological research and intercultural music communication and makes a contribution to understanding between cultures. The director is Raimund Vogels, professor of ethnomusicology at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and winner of the Lower Saxony Science Prize 2008.

Center for Education and Teaching Research

The Center for Education and Teaching Research (CeBU) initiates, promotes and communicates education and teaching research in the university's specialist areas and thus bundles interdisciplinary and innovation-oriented collaborations. With explicit reference to educational processes, research on teaching, learning, upbringing and socialization is examined in the broad spectrum of the organizational forms that are available for this purpose and those that are emerging.

Herder-Kolleg - Center for transdisciplinary cultural research

At the university, a focus on cultural studies has developed over three decades, which combines scientific and aesthetic or artistic practice in an innovative way. The teaching and research approaches emerge in the network of theater, music, media and literary studies as well as fine arts, cultural politics, philosophy and linguistics. They are bundled in the “Herder-Kolleg. Center for transdisciplinary cultural research ”.

Competence center for early childhood Lower Saxony

In 2007 the Competence Center Early Childhood Lower Saxony was founded at the University of Hildesheim Foundation. The university has many years of experience in the field of education and social sciences and makes its expertise available to Lower Saxony and nationwide through the research center. The center is a platform for research projects, for interdisciplinary and international exchange, for the promotion of young researchers, for regional networking and for supporting professionalization efforts in the fields of action. Research is conducted into the pedagogy of early childhood, child development, the social situation of children, the organization of educational settings and their legal anchoring. On this basis, important foundations for promoting early childhood education and development can be developed.

Center for Gender Research (ZfG)

The ZfG is the central platform for gender research at the University of Hildesheim. On the one hand, the ZfG strengthens visibility and serves for networking and cooperation as well as the profiling of gender research at the University of Hildesheim. On the other hand, the ZfG supports the expansion of local, regional, national and international research collaborations. Further goals of the ZfG are the promotion of young scientists and the increased integration of gender research into teaching.
