The foundation of the University of Bordeaux ( French Université de Bordeaux ) by Pope Eugene IV goes back to the year 1441. It was officially re-established on January 1st 2014 through the merger of 3 of the 4 universities of Bordeaux and now has more than 50,000 students. The 3 merged universities are:
- University of Bordeaux I (Natural and Engineering Sciences)
- Victor Segalen Bordeaux II University (Medicine, Humanities, Sports and Oenology)
- University of Montesquieu Bordeaux IV (Law and Economics)
The University of Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux III has been renamed the University of Bordeaux Montaigne following the merger of the 3 other universities .
history
After 1968, as a result of the May riots , the university was forced to move most of its activities from the city of Bordeaux to suburbs. Today the majority of Universities I, III and IV have their campuses in the suburb of Talence . There are also facilities in Gradignan and Pessac . University II has remained mostly in the center of Bordeaux and partly in buildings from the 19th century.
