The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Toul and the canton of Le Nord-Toulois (until 2015: canton of Thiaucourt-Regniéville ).

Vilcey-sur-Trey is located about 26 kilometers south-southeast of Metz in the Lorraine Regional Nature Park . Vilcey-sur-Trey is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Prény in the north and northeast, Vandières in the northeast, Villers-sous-Prény in the east, Norroy-lès-Pont-à-Mousson in the east and southeast, Fey-en-Haye in the south, Thiaucourt-Regniéville to the west and southwest and Viéville-en-Haye to the west.
