The Verwall (the more modern spelling Ferwall is not well established) is a mountain group in the central Eastern Alps in Austria . It is located in the federal states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol , between Bludenz and Landeck . The Tyrolean share is only slightly larger than that of Vorarlberg.

The Verwall is an ideal mountain range for the average mountain hiker and mountaineer. In contrast to the neighboring Silvretta , the Verwall group is only slightly glaciated. A network of high-altitude trails allows multi-day tours from hut to hut. Several peaks, all of which are in Tyrol, tower above the three thousand meter line. Many of the peaks have distinctive shapes. Above all, the part in Vorarlberg with its nature reserves is characterized by extensive originality and solitude. The Tyrolean part has not yet received any protection status and is threatened by development projects.

Geologically, the group belongs to the Eastern Alpine Crystalline Zone , the outermost northwest part to the Northern Limestone Alps .

Neighboring mountain groups

The Verwall bordered on the northwest by the Lechquellengebirge , in the northeast the Lech Valley Alps , in the southeast of the Samnaungruppe , in the south the Silvretta and the west by the Rätikon .

Boundary

In the north, the Klostertal forms the border from Bludenz to Stuben am Arlberg . From there it goes over the Arlbergpass into the Stanzer Tal to Wiesberg. This is where the rivers Rosanna and Trisanna meet. The border in the southeast is the Paznaun from Wiesberg to Galtür . In the south, the Verwall is bounded by the line between Galtür, the Zeinisjoch and Partenen . In the southwest the border runs along the Montafon between Partenen and Bludenz.

The Arlbergpass connects the Verwall with the Lechtal Alps. The Zeinisjoch creates the connection to the Silvretta.

Adjacent valleys with selected valley locations:

Subgroups

The boundary between the two approximately equal subgroups runs from north to south through the eponymous Verwalltal , the valley of the upper Rosanna containing the group quite characteristic of the north, the Ostanstieg to Arlberg , completely cuts ( Rosanna Gorge - Schönverwall - Ochsental ) , over the Muttenjoch in the upper Paznaun . So it divides the triangle of the Verwall group into two more triangles.

The western Verwall group (Westverwall) , mostly in Vorarlberg, with the main ridge north-south along the Verwall valley, and west-grazing secondary ridges towards the Montafon, includes, roughly from northwest to southeast:

The Eastern Verwall Group (Ostverwall) , entirely in Tyrol, with the main ridge along the Paznaun and the north-grazing secondary ridges towards the Klostertal, includes, primarily from west to east:

The national border runs on the main ridge, the western ridge of the Verwall valley, the eastern roof of the group is Tyrolean.

Passes and crossings

Apart from the above-mentioned passes, which connect the Verwall Group with the neighboring groups, there is no crossing within the Verwall Group that can be used by car.

Significant tourist passages are among others

  • Verbellner Winterjöchl (location of the Heilbronner Hut , 2308  m above sea level ). This crossing is often done by mountain bike, the bikes only have to be carried a short distance up a steep ascent at the end of the Schönverwall Valley.
  • Silbertaler Winterjöchl ( 1945  m above sea level , transition from Schönverwalltal to Silbertal)
  • Schafbichljoch ( 2636  m above sea level , transition from Fasultal to Paznauntal , connecting route Konstanzer Hütte - Friedrichshafener Hütte )
  • Kuchenjoch or Kuchenjöchli ( 2730  m above sea level , transition from Schönverwalltal to Moostal, connecting path Konstanzer Hütte - Darmstädter Hütte , Apothekerweg)
  • Doppelseescharte ( 2786  m above sea level , transition from Moostal to Paznauntal, Advokatenweg)

Nature conservation: Verwall bird sanctuary

The Verwall is a Natura 2000 area  ( AT3412000 ). The area, which was nominated as a European bird sanctuary , covers approx. 120 km² (12,057 ha) in parts of the municipalities of Klösterle , Silbertal , St. Gallenkirch and Gaschurn . During a mediation process, the Natura 2000 area was declared a nature reserve for a limited period from 1995–2004 ( Lgbl. 47/99 ), with the exception of the municipal area of Silbertal , before it was converted into a European reserve .

The Natura 2000 area Verwall stretches between 1,500 and 2,900 m. After Birds Directive Annex 1 found there worth protecting species are ptarmigan , capercaillie , black grouse , hazel grouse , black woodpecker , three-toed woodpecker , gray woodpecker , golden eagle , peregrine falcon , eagle owl , boreal owl , pygmy owl and red-backed shrike - which almost half of the domestic Vorarlberg species covered by Directive European protection fall can be found there.

Within the bird sanctuary Verwall lies the Wiegensee area , designated according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ( AT3413000 , 65 ha). To the south-west of Verwall and Wiegensee there is another European protected area, the FFH area Schuttfluren Tafamunt  ( AT3422000 , 68 ha). Both form the southwest slopes of the Versalspitze .

tourism

In winter, the Verwall group lies in the area of tension between the top destinations Schruns-Tschagguns in Montafon, St. Anton am Arlberg and Ischgl in Paznaun, and skiers and off-piste skiers cavort in Verwall. In summer, however, there is peace and quiet in the high alpine region between Arlberg and Silvretta - the Verwall group belongs to hikers and mountaineers. Ten Alpine Club huts offer accommodation and high alpine hikers will find a dense network of well-developed and marked high-altitude trails.

The planned construction of a chair lift system ("Skischaukel") between the ski areas of St. Anton am Arlberg and Kappl, which would have crossed the Verwall main ridge in the Malfontal area, was prohibited by the Federal Administrative Court at the end of 2018 after long legal disputes. In making this decision, the judiciary valued the protection of nature in this partly still undeveloped area higher than tourist interests.

Huts

There are ten Alpine Club huts in the Verwall Group. The highest hut, a bivouac box for four people, is the Kieler Wetterhütte at 2809  m above sea level. A. The highest managed hut is the Darmstädter Hütte at 2384  m above sea level. A. The largest hut with around 140 beds is the Heilbronner hut. It is remarkable that eight of the ten huts are located at an altitude of over 2300  m above sea level. A. , i.e. well above the tree line.

Most of these Alpine Club huts (seven) are base huts on the Verwall circuit .

High trails

The high-altitude trails allow you to cross the Verwall group without having to descend into the valley. The sometimes quite demanding trails, which are probably among the most beautiful in the entire Alps, mostly stay below the summit massifs and offer (emergency) descents into the valley at several points in an emergency.

  • Peter-Bruckmann-Weg : Konstanzer Hütte - Heilbronner Hütte
  • Friedrichshafener Weg: Heilbronner Hütte - Friedrichshafener Hütte
  • Georg-Prasser-Weg: circular hiking trail in the area of the Friedrichshafener hut
  • Hoppe-Seyler-Weg: Darmstädter Hütte - Niederelbehütte

  • Sepp-Jöchler-Weg : Darmstädter Hütte - Niederelbehütte
  • Stubener Weg: Kaltenberghütte - Reutlinger Hütte
  • Wormser Weg : Wormser Hut - Heilbronner Hut

Transalp

Two important Transalp routes , which are used by numerous mountain bikers in summer , also lead through the Verwall . The following are to be mentioned:

These routes , which include several daily stages, are long-distance cycle paths that also cross the European Alps , leading from Bavaria to Lake Garda .

Origin of name

The name comes from the Romanesque Val bel , which means 'beautiful valley'. In the course of some phonetic conversions, it became the current name.
