Pöchlarn is a municipality with 3948 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Melk district in Lower Austria ( Austria ).

Pöchlarn is located in the Mostviertel , on the right (southern) bank of the Danube directly at the mouth of the Erlauf , in the Nibelungengau , and is also known as the Nibelungenstadt . The area of ​​the municipality covers 17.9 km², 16.47% of the area is forested.

history

The region was settled as early as 4000 BC. The people acted u. a. with the serpentine mined in Klein-Pöchlarn . At the time of the Romans , the Noric Limes , the strictly guarded border with the Teutons , ran here . The area of ​​today's city center was then on a gravel island between the main stream of the Danube and the Erlauf . There was probably also an important Danube crossing at this point. Under the Flavians , the auxiliary troop fort Arelape was built on the island , in which later a cavalry troop and part of the Roman Danube fleet were stationed. The Romans also built a port.

Pöchlarn was known as the Bechelaren in the early Middle Ages and is mentioned in the Nibelungenlied as the family seat of Rüdiger von Bechelaren . In 832, Ludwig the German gave the Herilungoburg and the surrounding area to the diocese of Regensburg . The location of this castle is controversial, but the Pöchlarner area was part of this donation and it remained in the possession of Regensburg for almost 1000 years. The name Bechlare appears for the first time in 1043 . The Regensburg bishops also had possessions upstream of the Erlauf ( Wieselburg , Steinakirchen ), for which they established a settlement as a trading and transshipment point around 1100 in the area of ​​the former Roman camp. Important trade goods were wine, salt and iron from the Eisenwurzen . The market and fortification gave the place an urban character and in 1267 was called a city. Pöchlarn achieved its economic heyday in the 16th century.

As a result of the Thirty Years' War , mismanagement by Regensburg nurses and two major city fires in 1664 and 1766, the place lost its supra-regional importance as a marketplace. The rule of the diocese of Regensburg ended with the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803. In 1805 and 1809 the place was occupied by the French , war taxes and looting hit the city.

From 1719 to 1911 there was a wooden rake on the Erlauf and a timber industry was set up. The name of the district Am Rechen is still a reminder today. The largest sawmill of the Habsburg monarchy stood here in the 19th century . The construction of the Empress Elisabeth Railway ( Western Railway ) in 1858 and the local railway to Gaming (1877) brought further economic upswing . From 1893 to 2001 a ferry connected the place with the opposite bank of the Danube. Since 2001 there has been a road connection over the Danube with the Danube bridge Pöchlarn . The construction of the Danube power plant Melk 1979–1981 ended the threat of flooding.

Due to its convenient location in terms of transport, Pöchlarn is an important business location in the region. The largest employers include Vetropack (packaging glass ), Bramac (roof tiles) and Lasselsberger (ceramics and building materials), as well as a number of other small and medium-sized companies. The newly built Pöchlarn motorway junction (A1 exit 90) supported the development of a business settlement area.

• Waterway: On the waterway on the Danube . Before the road bridge (B 209) was opened in 2001 , a taxi ferry , and later a diesel ferry , also carried over transport for cars. Since November 2001, this road bridge has connected Pöchlarn with the town of Klein-Pöchlarn on the left (northern) bank of the Danube. The Donau Straße B3 runs through here and the Donauuferbahn has a train station. The left bank is preferred for the Danube Cycle Path .
