The Borough of Swindon is an independent administrative unit ( unitary authority ) in the south-west of England and belongs to the region of South-West England .
The borough was established in 1974 as a district of the county of Wiltshire and was initially called Thamesdown . The Borough of Swindon has been independent from Wiltshire since April 1, 1997 and is now part of the county for ceremonial purposes only. The administrative headquarters are located in Swindon , but the borough also includes the surrounding area with the towns of Badbury, Chiseldon, Highworth , Liddington, Wanborough and Wroughton.
