HC Dukla Jihlava is a Czech ice hockey club based in Jihlava .
Club history
HC Dukla Jihlava was founded in 1956 as an army sports club under the name Křídla vlastí Olomouc and moved to neighboring Jihlava in the same year. From 1957 the club played under the name ASD Dukla Jihlava . Dukla is one of the most successful ice hockey clubs in the former Czechoslovakia . In the 1970s and 1980s in particular, the club was also among the best in Europe. The team took part in the European Cup eleven times and reached the final eight times, but Dukla was denied a victory.
The club was able to be so successful mainly because the best Czechoslovak players had to play for the team as part of their army service . After the regime change, Dukla Jihlava lost this advantage, but in 1991 the team became Czechoslovak champions one last time .
In the Czech Extraliga , the highest Czech league that emerged after the collapse of Czechoslovakia, the club was able to hold out until 1999, once only through a successful relegation and another time because the league was enlarged. In the 2003/04 season Dukla Jihlava managed to get promoted again, but could only hold one year in the Extraliga. From 2005/06 HC Dukla Jihlava played in the first division , the second highest division in the Czech Republic. It was not until 2017 that they were promoted to the extra league, when the team prevailed in the relegation against the later relegated HC Energie Karlovy Vary . However, the relegation was not made.
