The Autódromo Juan y Oscar Alfredo Gálvez (also for short: Autódromo de Buenos Aires ) is a motorsport racetrack located in Buenos Aires . It is located in the Villa Riachuelo district , on Avenida 27 de Febrero . The circuit is considered to be quite slow and, due to its layout, offers few overtaking opportunities.
The circuit was named in 1989 in honor of Oscar Alfredo Gálvez . Gálvez was an Argentine racing driver who took part in Formula 1 at the 1953 Argentine Grand Prix, finishing fifth. In 2008, the track was in honor of the Argentine racer brothers Juan and Oscar Alfredo Gálvez in Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez renamed.
Between 1953 and 1998, 20 Formula 1 Grand Prix were held in Buenos Aires. In the 1950s and 1970s, the Argentine Grand Prix always took place in January and was therefore known as the “heat battle” in the 1950s, when a race still lasted three hours.
It is worth noting the fact that five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio won his home race four times out of six starts.
As part of the motorcycle world championship , the Argentine Grand Prix for motorcycles was held here ten times between 1961 and 1999 .
