Bănia (German: Bania , Hungarian: Bánya ) is a municipality in the Caraș-Severin County , Banat , Romania . The village of Gârbovăț also belongs to the municipality of Bănia .
Geographical location
Bănia is located in the south of the Caraș-Severin County and the Almăj Depression, on the DJ 571 county road and the DN 57B national road, 165 km from Reșița and 135 km from Caransebeş .

history
Archaeological excavations from 1878 uncovered a prehistoric settlement of the Coțofeni culture on the municipal area . Artifacts from Roman times were also found: a Dacian coin, 250 Roman coins from the 6th century BC. BC, a coin from Constantine the Great .
The place Bania is entered on the Josephine land survey of 1717 . After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary . Bánya belonged to Krassó-Szörény county .
In the first decade of the 20th century, the law for the Magyarization of place names (Ga. 4/1898) was applied, including the Magyarization of all toponyms on maps , land register extracts and city maps . The official place name was Bánya . The Hungarian place names remained valid until the administrative reform of 1923 in the Kingdom of Romania , when the Romanian place names were introduced.
The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the triple division of the Banat , which Bănia fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
In the interwar period, the village was part of the Caraş County. Today it belongs to the Caraș-Severin district.
