Bohoduchiw ( Ukrainian Богодухів ; Russian Богодухов Bogoduchow ) is a city in Ukraine and the administrative center of the raion of the same name in the northwest of the Kharkiv Oblast with about 15,000 inhabitants (2015).

geography

Bohoduchiw is located on the right bank of the river Merla (Ukrainian Мерла ), a 116 km long, left tributary of the Vorskla 60 km northwest of the Oblast center Kharkiv and 55 km east of Ochtyrka . The city has a train station on the Sumy - Kharkiv railway line .

The municipality also includes the villages of Moskalenky (Москаленки), Mussijky (Мусійки), Palyanychnyky (Паляничники) and Semeniw Yar (Семенів Яр).

history

Founded in 1662, the place received the status of a city in 1781. In the 19th century the city was the administrative center of the Ujesd Bohoduchiw in the Kharkov governorate . On August 7, 1943, the city was liberated from the occupation of the Wehrmacht by the Red Army .

Personalities

The Soviet film director Viktor Ivchenko was born on November 4, 1912 in Bohoduchiw. On July 7, 1966, the Ukrainian politician Andrij Rewa was born in the city.
