geography

Geographical location

Börger lies in the Hümmling , a geest landscape in the Emsland . The community is located between the cities of Meppen in the southwest, Papenburg in the northwest and Friesoythe in the northeast on the upper reaches of the Ohe , which runs just below its source area through the lowland east of Börger. The village is only 40 m above sea level ; Not far south-southwest of the town center is the 66 m high Sunderberg. The Ohe, a stream on which the fulling mill used to stand, flows east of Börger. The districts of Nordkamp and Dosfeld , which are largely dominated by agriculture, are located in the southwest of the village .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities in the north are the communities Surwold and Breddenberg in the combined community of Nordhümmling , in the east the communities Lorup in the combined community Werlte and the community Spahnharrenstätte , in the south the community Werpeloh and in the west the communities Wippingen and Neubörger in the combined community Dörpen .

history

An exact date for the foundation of the village cannot be determined. Börger was first mentioned in writing as "Burgiri" (= birch height) in the Corvey monastery writings around 854. Germanic tribes first settled on the Hümmling around the time of Christ's birth. The location and region are numerous relics megalithic monuments in the Beaker culture in including the passage grave (Steenhus) and the sacrificial stone in place. The tomb of King Surwold , which was mainly handed down in the legend , was also located here. The community developed from 18 farms and today has around 2800 inhabitants. The old village structure can still be seen today: Courtyards and their location testify to the old way of settlement ( Haufendorf ).

In the Middle Ages, the entire Hümmling fell victim to looting and pillage by the neighboring tribes of the Frisians, Dutch and Stedinger, although it was only sparsely populated and the area was very agricultural. In 1266 the inhabitants of the Hümmling tried in vain to submit to the Frisians in order to gain a patron. In 1394 the inhabitants of the Hümmling won the Bishop of Münster as patron when they submitted to him after he had gained power over the Cloppenburg region.

During the Thirty Years' War in 1647 many villages in the area around the Ems were looted and burned down. The population of Börger fled into the surrounding moors. It is said that the inhabitants paid a ransom to avoid being pillaged by the mercenaries. In the years after the Thirty Years' War, the plague occurred several times on the entire Hümmling and also in Börger and drastically decimated the population.

A church in Börger is first mentioned in 1490. In 1573 the parish of Börger was founded. From 1543 to 1659 Börger was a Protestant as a result of the Reformation and the Thirty Years' War. In 1652 the first pastor was resident in Börger.

In 1788, farmers from Börger began to settle in the north-east and north-west, from which the communities of Breddenberg and Neubörger emerged .

Since the soil in the area of the municipality consisted mainly of sandy soil, heather and bog, agriculture was only possible with mediocre yields until the invention of artificial fertilizers and deep plows. Many farmers also kept sheep and bees in the heath. The population was therefore poor. That is why many of the farmers also worked as peat cutters - out of season - in the Netherlands. Due to the poor conditions, Börger was hit by the wave of emigration to America in the 1900 century. In 1887, with the end of the Duke of Arenberg's feudal rule, the region experienced an economic boom, as the conditions for the farmers improved and more of them could buy new arable land. During this time, peat cutting began in Börger.

In 1879 farmers settled in the north of Börger, across the forest, and the Börgerwald settlement was formed . 1930 to 1940 farmers settled on the northern edge of the municipality, d. H. north of Börgerwald and Börger im Moor - the Börgermoor settlement was formed . In 1934, the two districts of Börgermoor and Börgerwald were united independently of Börger and to form the municipality of Surwold .

Börger belonged to the administrative region Weser-Ems until December 31, 2004 , which was dissolved as a result of an administrative reform at the end of this date.

coat of arms

Blazon : Red divided over gold, in it a beehive in mixed up colors between two birch leaves, below a millstone with mill iron.

The birch leaves symbolize the meaning of the name "Burg iri". The beehive refers to the beekeeping that is widely practiced in the Hümmling heath. The millstone reminds us that many mills used to be located in Börger. The red and gold shield division corresponds to the coat of arms of the Imperial Corvey Abbey, to whose extensive Emsland property Börger belonged up to the 13th century. The colors red and gold are at the same time those of the duchy of Münster, which, as Corvey's successor, ruled the country until the end of the old empire in 1803.

The coat of arms was created by the heraldist Dr. Ulf-Dietrich Korn from Münster designed.

The oak forest on the south-eastern outskirts is listed as a natural monument "Osterbrink". Immediately next to the forest is the village pond and home. The biotope "Glider Airfield Surwold" in the north is characterized by pronounced, dense heather stands and complexes of sandy, lean grass and grass turf. In the "Heideweg" biotope you can find sandy areas that are poor in bases and nutrients, as well as dense heather plants.
