The CTS (internal type designation GMX320) was shown for the first time in summer 2001 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance , the formal public premiere was carried out by GM at the IAA 2001 and from the beginning of 2003 it was also delivered to Europe.
It is based on the GM Sigma platform and has rear-wheel drive . As a result, the weight distribution of the vehicle is 53:47, which should ensure balanced driving characteristics. All CTS models have V-engines and independent suspension ; the chassis was tuned on the Nürburgring in Germany . The turning circle is 10.80 m.
The car was initially available in Europe with the six-cylinder engines known from the Opel Omega with a capacity of 2.6 liters (133 kW / 181 PS - engine code LY9) and 3.2 liters (160 kW / 218 PS - engine code LA3) . A manual transmission from Getrag or an automatic transmission of the type GM Hydra-Matic 5L40-E were installed as the transmission , both with five gears.
CTS-V
From model year 2004, a sports version was also sold on the domestic market under the designation CTS-V, which was equipped with eight-cylinder engines with an output of 298 kW (400 hp). Its displacement was initially 5.7 liters (engine code LS6), from 2006 6.0 liters (code LS2). The power transmission in the CTS-V was carried out exclusively via a manual six-speed transmission of the Tremec T56 type.

In September 2007, the second generation (internal type designation GMX322) was launched on the US market and was formally shown for the first time at the North American International Auto Show ( NAIAS ) in the spring of the same year.
In the second generation, the 2.8-liter engine was only offered on export markets. The new top-of-the-range engine was now a 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct gasoline injection that developed 229 kW (311 hp). A 2.9-liter V6 turbodiesel engine that was first announced and which was supposed to produce a maximum of 184 kW did not appear.
The power is transmitted either via a six-speed gearbox or the six-speed automatic gearbox GM Hydra-Matic 6L50. In conjunction with the latter, the CTS was also available with all-wheel drive for the first time .
The all-wheel drive is electronically controlled and normally works with a power distribution of 2: 3 between the front and rear axles. If a wheel slips, this is counteracted automatically by directing up to 75% of the drive force to the rear axle or all drive force to the front axle. The rear axle has a mechanically controlled limited slip differential that automatically supplies up to 80% of the drive force to the wheel with the better traction.
The c W value is 0.33.
Optional equipment of CTS also includes a CD / DVD / HDD / MP3 / satellite navigation radio with a 40 gigabyte - hard drive and an 8-inch TFT - flat panel display with touch-screen function.
In 2012, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 48 Cadillac CTS were newly registered in Germany, 38 of them by commercial owners.

CTS-V
Sales of the high-performance variant CTS-V began in autumn 2008, and the formal presentation took place at NAIAS 2008. A 6.2 liter V8 with supercharging is used as the engine. This engine, known as LSA , is a variant of the LS9 that is used in the new Corvette ZR1 . The engine output is 415 kW (564 hp). The power is transmitted via an automatic transmission or a new Tremec TR 6060 transmission with six gears and a two-disc clutch. The turning circle of this version measures 11.55 m, and you c w value is 0.355. Your chassis is equipped with the electromagnetic shock absorber control Magnetic-Ride . Accelerated from a standstill, the vehicle reaches a speed of 100 km / h in less than 5 seconds, 200 km / h after a further 10 seconds and ultimately over 300 km / h.
CTS Sport Wagon
This station wagon version was shown for the first time at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August 2008, the formal premiere took place at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008. It was launched on the market in August 2009. The rear is dominated by large vertical taillights that extend to the edge of the roof. For a station wagon model, the C-pillar is wide and the load volume of 412 to 1523 liters is rated as rather small for the vehicle class. V6 engines with a displacement of 3.0 or 3.6 liters serve as the drive.
CTS coupe
At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2008, a coupé version of the CTS was presented for the first time as a near-series concept vehicle. The Coupé has the same wheelbase as other CTS, but is a few centimeters shorter and flatter. At the rear, it is wider than the other CTS derivatives.
The production version of the CTS Coupé was formally presented for the first time at the LA Auto Show in December 2009, went into production in early 2010 and was sold from summer. It was offered with the 3.6 liter V6 engine and the 6.2 liter V8 engine.
Facelift
In spring 2011, all body variants for the 2012 model year, which will be available from autumn, were revised, with the radiator grille now having three instead of two horizontal struts. The maximum output of the 3.6-liter V6 engine was increased to 237 kW (322 hp) as part of this facelift.
In March 2013, the production of the second generation of the CTS ended.

On March 26, 2013, GM presented the new version of the 2014 model year CTS (internal type designation A1LL). Formally, it was shown for the first time at NYIAS. Like the mid-range ATS model, the third generation is based on the Alpha platform , also has a front engine and is available with both rear-wheel drive and permanent all-wheel drive.
The CTS is offered with a two-liter four-cylinder turbo engine and a 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is available both in a version without a turbocharger and in a TwinTurbo version in the VSport version.
Production began in autumn 2013, followed shortly afterwards by the market launch in North America. The model has been available in Europe since the beginning of 2014.
In late 2014, the model received a facelift to introduce the new brand logo.
At the beginning of July 2019, the production of the vehicle ended because the indirect successor model Cadillac CT5 is being produced at the GM plant in Lansing Grand River Assembly . The last Cadillac CTS produced is from the 2019 model year, painted black and has a vehicle identification number ending with K0148662 .
CTS-V
The CTS-V , which has a maximum output of 477 kW and was formally presented at the NAIAS of the same year, has been available for order since October 2015 . From spring 2016 this will then be delivered to customers in Germany. The car is powered by a 6.2 liter V8 engine with supercharger and a maximum torque of 855 Nm. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is specified as 3.7 s, the top speed is 320 km / h.

Cadillac CTS in the film
In the film Matrix Reloaded , the main characters Morpheus, Trinity and the key maker use a silver Cadillac CTS during a chase. At the end of the hunt, however, the CTS is just junk. A CTS suffered almost the same fate "on a test drive" in the film Bad Boys II , where it ends up being demolished and shot to pieces in the counter hall of a bank. In the TV series Burn Notice , Sam Ax, one of the main characters, drives a Cadillac CTS. Katherine Mayfair drove a red Cadillac CTS in the fourth season of Desperate Housewives until the tornado. In Hit and Run with Dax Shepard and Bradley Cooper , a red CTS-V Sport Wagon is used as the chase vehicle.
