Copa México 1995/96

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa MX 1995/96 was the 40th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico .

The cup tournament was held in the first quarter of 1996. Eligible to participate were the 16 teams that played second-rate that season as many teams from the first division. Because the first division was played in 1995/96 with 18 teams, the first division Monarcas Morelia and Puebla FC had to forego a cup participation.

Cup winners for the second time after 1976 was the UANL Tigres team , which ironically had to relegate to the second division a few weeks later at the end of the regular season.

mode

The matches were played in the knockout system, with the teams in the second division having home rights in each competition with a first division team. In the first round it was ensured that a first division team played against a second division team. In the second round, for which six second division teams and ten first division teams had qualified, random lots were drawn, so that there were only four disputes between the first and second division. First division teams had to compete against each other in three games and the match between Pachuca and San Francisco was the only time that two second division teams met in this competition. Because there were four first and second division teams in the quarter-finals, they were drawn against each other again, with all second division teams eliminated: Irapuato and Pachuca clearly (1: 4 and 0: 3 against Guadalajara and Cruz Azul ), while Hermosillo (against the later Cup winners UANL Tigres !) And Tampico-Madero (against Atlas ) only lost on penalties . While the first rounds were decided in just one game, the semi-finals and finals were played back and forth.
