Cornea (German: Kornia , Kornja , Hungarian: Somfa , Kornya ) is a municipality in the Caraș-Severin District , Banat , Romania . The villages of Crușovăț , Cuptoare , Macoviște also belong to the Cornea municipality .

Geographical location

Cornea is located in the southeast of Banat, in the Timis - Cerna -Tal, north of Baile Herculane , in the Domaşnea - Mehadia -sink that the east by Ţarcu- and Godeanu Mountains and to the west by semenic flanked. Cornea is located 86.6 km from Reșița , 46.81 km from Caransebeş , 90 km from Oravița .

Over the centuries the place name appeared under different spellings: 1539 Somffa , 1582 Somfalu , 1603 Korny , 1607 Somfalua , 1690–1700 Kornyi , 1717 Kornia , 1808 Kornja , Kornya , 1888 Kornya ( Kornia ), 1913 Somfa , 1919: Cornea .

A first documentary mention comes from the year 1539. On the Josephine land survey of 1717 the place Kornia is registered with 48 houses. After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718) the village was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat .

The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the Banat being divided into three parts , whereby Cornea fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
