societies
The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). So this season the following teams played for the division 2 championship : Relegated promoted
- Group A: USL Dunkerque , US Valenciennes-Anzin , promoted SC Amiens , AS Beauvais , AS Red Star , FC Rouen , promoted CS Sedan , CS Louhans-Cuiseaux , promoted Racing Ancenis , US Orléans , FC Bourges , Stade Laval , Le Mans UC , EA Guingamp , SCO Angers , FC Tours , relegated Brest Armorique FC , La Roche VF
- Group B: Olympique Saint-Quentin , SAS Épinal , Racing Strasbourg , FC Mulhouse , FC Gueugnon , promoted FC Grenoble Isère , FC Annecy , promoted LB Châteauroux , Stade Rodez , AS Saint-Seurin , relegated Girondins Bordeaux , promoted FC Perpignan , Olympique Alès , FC Istres Ville Nouvelle , FC Martigues , relegated OGC Nice , SC Bastia , Gazélec FCO Ajaccio
Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
The three clubs that were forced to move to the second division for financial reasons before the start of the season coped with this situation very differently: Bordeaux promptly returned to the top division, while OGC Nice, which was also newly founded after liquidation, was in the middle of the group table. Brest, however, played a few games, then filed for bankruptcy and was no longer allowed to participate in the game; the games already played were canceled. Half of the six third division promoters placed in the respective midfield of their season, and with Grenoble, the immediate relegation hit only one of these "newbies". Overall, the attractiveness of Division 2, the playing strength and the financial strength of most of its clubs remained constant at a low level, so that the association initiated a league reorganization for the season after next .
In the 578 encounters 1,286 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.2 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers were in Group A Jean-Pierre Orts from Rouen with 22 and in Group B Didier Monczuk (Strasbourg) with 21 goals; the league top scorer thus won the place. For the following season came with Stade Rennes , AS Cannes and AS Nancy three relegated from Division 1 ; five teams rose from the third highest division, namely OFC Charleville , US Créteil , FC Lorient , Chamois Niort and ASOA Valence .
