The Division 2 1992/93 was the 54th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from August 8, 1992 to May 15, 1993; from December 13th to January 8th there was a winter break.
Second division champions were FC Martigues .
societies
The 28 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and five promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). So this season the following teams played for the division 2 championship : Relegated promoted
- Group A: CS Sedan , promoted OFC Charleville , promoted US Créteil , relegated AS Nancy , SAS Épinal , FC Mulhouse , CS Louhans-Cuiseaux , FC Annecy , Stade Rodez , promoted ASOA Valence , FC Perpignan , Olympique Alès , FC Istres Ville Nouvelle , FC Martigues , relegated AS Cannes , OGC Nice , SC Bastia , Gazélec FCO Ajaccio
- Group B: USL Dunkerque , SC Amiens , AS Beauvais , AS Red Star , Racing Ancenis , FC Bourges , FC Gueugnon , FC Rouen , Stade Laval , Le Mans UC , relegated Stade Rennes , EA Guingamp , promoted FC Lorient , SCO Angers , FC Tours , LB Châteauroux , newcomer Chamois Niort , La Roche VF
Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion. After this season, a reform of Division 2 was implemented with the aim of concentrating performance (return to a single track and reduction of participants to 22 teams, D2 again as a pure professional league, new 3rd league as a substructure), resulting in a corresponding "race for eleventh group place" had the consequence.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. If there was still parity - like this season between Istres and Charleville - the higher number of hits decided. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
In the promotion battle of the two groups at the end Martigues, which was allowed to debut in the top division, and Angers each against a first division relegated team. Of the five newcomers to the second division, Valence, Charleville and Niort managed to keep the class despite its considerable reduction, whereby the ASOAV, which emerged from the traditionally strong population of Armenians in exile in France, only narrowly failed to qualify for promotion relegation. The relegation of 14 teams caused by the league reform hit some clubs that had belonged to the second division for many years, such as Châteauroux (17 seasons second division), Guingamp and Gazélec Ajaccio (16 each); among them were Amiens (22) and Lorient (14) but also some “elevator teams” of the recent past.
In the 612 encounters 1,457 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.4 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers in Group A were Franck Priou from Cannes with 21 and in Group B Jean-Pierre Orts (Rouen) with 18 goals; the league top scorer thus won Priou. For the following season , two relegated from Division 1 ( US Valenciennes-Anzin and Olympique Nîmes ) were added; Due to the fact that the third first division relegated SC Toulon went the direct route to the third highest division, unlike at the beginning of the season, a team could exceptionally rise from this with champions Stade Briochin .

Determination of the master
The two group winners met each other on a return game to determine this year's division 2 champion. Martigues only managed a draw at his home game (1: 1); however, the southern French won 4: 3 in Angers and thus secured the second division championship.

Relegation
The group second and third fought in a two-stage elimination which of them against the first division 18. US Valenciennes-Anzin was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. First, the two runners-up in a single game each met the third of the other group; Rennes prevailed 1-0 against Nice and Cannes 2-1 against Rouen and then met each other - now again in a two-legged manner. The team from the Côte d'Azur won 1-0 in Brittany and 3-0 in front of their own audience.
Then Cannes also prevailed in Valenciennes (2-0 win), so that a 1-1 draw in the second leg was enough for him to get promoted again.
