Divizia Națională 1996/97

The Divizia A 1997/98 was the 60th season of the highest Romanian football league . It started on August 2, 1997 and ended on May 2, 1998 . The game was closed from mid-December to the end of February ( winter break ). Before the start of the season, the league was renamed Divizia Națională in Divizia A.

Champion was Steaua Bucharest for the sixth time in a row , which set the record for Chinezul Timișoara from 1922 to 1927 .

The 18 teams played against each other twice on 34 match days. The three last-place teams went into the Divizia B from. There were three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, it was not the goal difference that decided , but the direct comparison .
