List of honorary members of the Vienna State Opera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of honorary members of the Vienna State Opera contains all honorary members of the 1869 Court Opera opened Vienna State Opera , including the year of the awarding of honorary membership.

The award

Honorary membership is awarded by the State Opera on the proposal of the director with the approval of the works council and the holding company. Honorary members can become artists who have been associated with the opera for many years, as well as people who have done a lot for the house.

Since 2004 the honorary members are also ring bearers, until 2004 the honorary membership was only awarded with a certificate. The ring was designed by Hermann Gmeiner-Wagner ( Juwelier Wagner ) and bears the name of the recipient. The top of the ring shows an engraving of the outside view of the State Opera, the inside of the ring shows the auditorium.

Some honorary members received the ring retrospectively: Ioan Holender received honorary membership in 1995, and in 2004 he was also awarded the ring. Plácido Domingo and Jose Carreras became honorary members in 1988 and additional ring bearers in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Neil Shicoff received honorary membership in 2003 and was also awarded the ring in 2004.

Johan Botha was awarded honorary membership in 2016, the official celebration was postponed due to illness, Botha died before the planned official award of the certificate.
