Course of the game

The 34th final of the FDGB soccer cup was the re-edition of the previous year's final. Once again the champions (BFC) and the runner-up met each other. In contrast to the previous year, the Berlin team won the championship even more confidently with a six point lead. Both teams could essentially compete in the last formations. Both coaches took the risk of using the most recently injured players, Rohde (BFC) and Pilz (Dresden).

The BFC had the first chance in the game. Right from the start, Pastor matched the freestanding back, but he hesitated too long with his shot on goal. The Dresdner countered immediately and had good chances of scoring within ten minutes with two Minge and Pilz, which were also awarded. But the team from Dresden secured dominance on the field, came up with more intelligent moves and greater variability. The injury-related elimination of left winger Lippmann in the 34th minute left no break in the flow of the game. On the other hand, the BFC players looked overwrought and tense. The defenders could not find a bond, the strikers were too often in the wrong position. Only after half an hour did the champions get going, driven by Thom the BFC achieved a certain balance on the field and came up with new scoring opportunities. In the 44th minute, however, the setback came, and right-back Döschner was cleverly able to achieve a 1-0 lead for Dynamo Dresden with a remarkable goal in the 44th minute.

During the half-time break, the Dresden players prepared mentally for the expected attack by the opponent, while coach Bogs cheered his team on again in the BFC dressing room. At first, Bog's words seemed to have had the greater effect. Between the 46th and 49th minutes his players had three 100 percent chances to score, and in the 51st minute the youngest Berliner Thom managed to equalize with a spin free kick. The BFC stormed on unabated, but became vulnerable to counterattacks. In the 60th minute, a gross defensive mistake led to a renewed lead for Dresden, which the noticeably improved 19-year-old Stübner scored with a forceful shot. Dresden's best player, Matthias Döschner, made the preliminary decision in the 67th minute. With a true-to-size cross, he staged his center forward Minge, who took advantage of another mistake by the BFC defense to make it 3-1. Although the Berliners tried to turn the game around, it was just a precipitous and disorderly rebellion. Ernst's goal came too late in the 88th minute.

Aftermath

The final had an aftermath at the German Football Association of the GDR. In a subsequent video analysis, objectively massive wrong decisions by the referee collective, especially with regard to Dynamo Dresden, were confirmed. For example, a clearly regular goal by Ralf Minge was denied due to an alleged offside position. An eight-person group of officials under the leadership of DFV President Günter Erbach said: "The wrong decisions against Dynamo Dresden are overall more serious (higher quality in the negative sense), as they were partly made in a dangerous area and can have a game-decisive character (non-recognition of a regular goal from Minge). ". In total, the referees were found to have made 17 gross errors, 14 in favor of the BFC. As a consequence, the referee Manfred Roßner was initially banned for the upcoming league season. His line judge Klaus Scheurell was not considered for the next European Cup use on the line. Already in the previous year's final in 1983/84 , similar game distortions had occurred with the same pairing, as a result of which referee Wolfgang Henning was also suspended.
