River system of the Moselle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Catchment area of the Moselle

The river system of the Moselle is characterized by the fact that it flows from a high low mountain range into the Lorraine basin, which is only slightly subdivided by hills , and from this into another low mountain range, the Rhenish Slate Mountains , which it however at a measured distance from the mountain ranges of the Hunsrück and the Eifel crosses.

Its upper right tributaries, which come parallel to it from the Vosges , are almost as rich in water (the Moselotte even significantly richer) and almost as long as the Moselle at its mouth. The two longest tributaries reach the Moselle (which is now much longer there) soon after it enters the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The Sauer with all its tributaries and the northern tributaries of the Saar drain these mountains to the south. The Saar and its tributaries transport water from various directions, from the Vosges in the south, from the Palatinate Forest in the east and the Nied from the area between the Saar and the middle Moselle.

Most of the rivers of the Moselle system have a slight gradient, except for the upper reaches. In the rivers that come parallel to the Our and the Lower Sauer as the Eifel, the valley flanks are roughly the same height for long stretches, as the valley floors and the surrounding plateau drop in the same way towards the Moselle. The tributaries from the Hunsrück to the lower Moselle are among the shorter and have the steepest gradients. Their valleys are often only shallow hollows at the foot of the Hunsrück main ridge, but deeply cut just before the Moselle.

Representation:
  • Upstream order
  • A body of water flows into that of the river courses listed above, the name of which begins above the indication of the confluence side ("right" / "left") of the flowing water.
  • Arrows are directed downstream and are in front of geographically upper parts of a previously mentioned river course.
  • Lengths given after the slash refer to the course of the river according to the official classification in contrast to the traditional use of the name,
or to the scientifically longest flow path in contrast to the officially defined river.
  • Where the flow path from a (secondary) inflow and the main body of water (part from the mouth of the inflow to the mouth of the main body of water ) is
    longer than the main
body of water, the point at which the secondary influx flows is due to its distance from the source or the mouth of the higher-ranking body of water marked.
  • Waters of less than 25 km in particular are included if they are to be regarded as part of a longer watercourse.
