The Football League Third Division 1975/76 was the 49th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Hereford United became third division champions, and Cardiff City and Millwall FC , who were behind them, also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1976/77, the second division clubs Oxford United , York City and Portsmouth FC, which are ranked in the table below, took the places. FC Aldershot , Colchester United , Southend United and Halifax Town had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Lincoln City and Northampton Town , Reading FC and Tranmere Rovers took the vacant positions in the following season 1976/77 .
